There's nothing as comforting as a mother's care when one gets sick. This is a sweet story.

It's wonderful both can find peace so and be looked after by Mum/Auntie. I can definitely see this happening.

Author Reply: Thanks, Larner! I'm so glad you enjoyed this and could "see" it happening! :)

Oh, now I'm so sad I haven't gotten around to reading the challenge stories yet! This was such a sweet story. Bad luck that Pippin got sick just as Merry was having a spell...and I love (in that weird way that I enjoy reading about characters suffering and sad and angsty) that it's Pippin's illness that brings horrible memories back to Merry--so he's upset about Pippin being hurt, not necessarily the Witch King. (Which makes me wonder what his nightmare was about...hmmm...) And, of course, having Mum come around and make everything better was just perfect. No matter how old you get, there's nothing quite like a little mother's TLC when you're sick. (My mom's sent chicken soup over the phone before. LOL!)

Author Reply: Hi storyfish! I'm so glad you enjoyed this, and thank you for saying so! You're right, there isn't anything like a mother's care when a person is sick (or a favorite aunt's, in Pippin's case). And I think Esmeralda enjoyed looking after the lads, especially now that they are usually so independent. It must have been gratifying to mother them both a bit - though, of course, she would have wised for better circumstances. But I'm glad *you* liked the angst! :D

Aw this a great Slightly Tookish. I love the double meaning of the title. If you wanted to you could safely expand Pippin's explanation so that Esmerelda is given a chance to understand a little more of what her lads went through.

Author Reply: Thanks, harrowcat! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It's actually deliberate on my part for Esmeralda (and the other parents, and Pippin's sisters) not to know exactly what Merry and Pippin went through. It's Merry, in fact, who makes Pippin realize this in a ficlet I wrote called "Moving Day," in which they first move to Crickhollow. Merry explains to Pippin that if their families fully understand what they went through, the would have had to experience those same horrors, and they wouldn't want that. So I'm not sure if I'll ever expand Pippin's conversation with Esmeralda, though I would not mind writing something in which Merry helps Pippin's parents understand more about what happened! :D

What a lovely story! I was heading over to the Challenge to do some more reading tonight when I saw this here.

I love the weaving of the relationships, the deftness of your descriptions. Very nicely done.

Author Reply: Thank you very much! I am trying to be more descriptive in my writing so it tickles me that you noticed :)

This is a sweet story... Pippin taking care of Merry, but Merry worried about pippin as well.
Memories is a hard think to deal with....
Esmerelda with be with her lads to take control....

Great work...

Author Reply: Thanks very much! Merry and Pippin take turns in looking after each other, but sometimes a mother's help is needed! :)

*happyhappysigh* This is so sweet and caring, and Pippin's careful tending of Merry even though he's so sick himself shows both his new maturity and his love for his cousin. And Esme - no wonder, out of all of Pippin's many relations, she's his favorite aunt. Lovely little story. :-)

Author Reply: Thanks so much, Pips! I'm very happy that you enjoyed this. It was fun to wrote Esmeralda for a change, and also a sick!Pippin that is not too sick! Sometimes Merry needs comforting too. :)
