At Last  by SlightlyTookish 6 Review(s)

Nicely done! I really got a sense of the movement of time with the alternating scenes. Things were moving fast, if not fast enough for two hobbits separated unwillingly. Their loneliness and worry came through strongly as well. It was nice to see Pippin assuring Gandalf for a moment.

Good work.

Author Reply: Thanks so much for the lovely review! I'm so glad that the loneliness and sense of urgency came through - I'd hope it would. I personally love conversations between Pippin and Gandalf and it was so nice to finally write one again. I'm delighted that you enjoyed it :)

The last part of your story is one of my very favorite moments from the book. I cannot read of the cock crowing and Rohan's horns answering without tears starting in my eyes. I could not read your description of it without tears starting in my eyes.

Thank you for the lovely vignettes.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, belleferret. I'm honored that it moved you so.

I wasn't able to review when I read this yesterday at work so sorry that it is late. My favourite bit is the second one with Pippin having a sight of Merry and Dernhelm. Pippin giving hope to Gandalf is great.

Author Reply: Thanks so much, harrowcat! That one was my favorite to write, I'm really fascinated by the idea of Pippin having the Took Sight and it was fun to write that in some small way. I actually have an idea for another ficlet that would explore Pippin's Sight more funny, I just need to find some time to write it! :)

Oh, yes--exactly right, SlightlyTookish. A wonderful quartet of shorts here that truly capture the moments. And love the stubborn silence of Dernhelm, both brooding and seeking to keep the secret as long as possible.

Author Reply: Thanks so much, Larner! I'm very glad you enjoyed these. Dernhelm must have been a very strange companion to Merry after having been surrounded by at least one friend during the entire journey up until this point. What a switch!

Those four scenes were really moving. In particular I liked the expression "wretchedly lonely", which perfectly describes Merry's feelings. It was a long way from Rohan to Gondor.

Author Reply: I'm so happy that you found these moving, Andrea. Thank you! I think Merry's journey in ROTK is especially heartbreaking, as he is left behind time and time again. It must have been a very lonely ride.
