Hi Pearl! I found your story poignant. After reading the other reviews, I can't add anymore. As I agree

with what has being written.

I wept the first time I read this on over a year ago and even though I know the ending I'm crying again. You expressed so many emotions through Bilbo's diary that I could *see* what was happening.

He stared at the diary, fear widening his eyes and then causing them to slowly blink.

There was no happy ending. (I had the same reaction. Like getting punched in the gut.)

I am helping her. I am loving her, even if from afar. (Oh, Bilbo.)

I sang her lullabies until I, too, must have drifted off to sleep with Amethyst in my arms.

In the morning I woke up. (It knocked the wind out of me. Oh poor Bilbo!)

This has always been one of my own favorites. The entire story came to me during a 45 min. drive in my car. Not every word, but the plot from beginning to end as well as some of the diary entries and such details.

I'm glad I could give you one of those good kinds of cry that we so often seem to need.

Thank you for taking the time to let me know how the story touched you.

Hugs :-)
Pearl

Oh, poor Bilbo...and poor Frodo, hearing about this that way!! *Huggles them* I feel very sorry for Amethyst, too...:(

We all have some things we don't share with anyone - especially the sad times.

I've read this several times, and I can't believe I never left a review! Beautiful, beautiful story. The diary entries were so Bilbo-y! I'd love to see Amethyst in her own fic, though that might take away a bit of the magic of this one. I loved the ending, very poignant. You made me cry, and I don't cry too easily. Well done!

Author Reply: Thank you so very much StillQuill :-)

I'm so touched that the story has so touched you. Sad to say, I've never given the poor lass another thought. But that is often the case for me with OCs. I'm so glad you like this story and have even read it more than once! It came to me almost in its entirety during a 45 minute car ride and I could hardly wait to get home to write it.

Again, thank you so much! :-)

I sort of picked this one at random to read, glad now that I did--I love a good tearjerker! And Bilbo just sounds so Bilbo here! And Frodo--perfection. Your characterizations are nothing short of amazing. A masterpiece. Did I say I love it?

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Armariel :) wow, amazing and a masterpiece *blushing* Thank you for such kind compliments :)

What a beautiful, sad story! Poor Bilbo. I like this interpretation of why he didn't marry, though I wish that no one should have to go through such sorrow. I'm impressed with your ability to catch both extreme happiness and extreme grief in the pages of the diary--strange how both emotions are caught more in what is not able to be written ("and I...I..."). I'm glad I stumbled upon this story!

Author Reply: Thank you, storyfish! I'm glad you stumbled here as well :) This was one of those stories that dropped into my head out of the blue, and pretty much in it's entirety.

Thank you for your kind compliments :)

Too lazy to log in...

*sniffles* Oh, Pearl, that is BEAUTIFUL! So sad, and yet with hope in it...poor, poor Bilbo...*grabs more tissues*

Okay, i'm gonna copy past parts i like and respond to them. don't know why, just feel like it.

Bebother and confusticate meddling female relations! (hee hee, very bilbo)

This would be interesting reading." Frodo had decided, (yes yes, i'm glad he's not too goody two shoes to read it!)

And she’s not even a flower! Perhaps that is why the Aunts appear to have overlooked her? (nice bit, i loved it, "not even a flower", hee hee)

How very pleasant such a simple action can feel. (Aw! How sweet!)

She said yes! (eeek, so what happened?why didn't they live happily ever after, can i skip to the end?)

The kettle did not make it to the tea pot. Frodo suddenly froze. His hands lost their grip, and the kettle fell to the table top with a thud and slosh of boiling water. At least it had remained upright, otherwise he would have been scalded. Frodo felt his heart freeze inside his chest. He had stopped breathing for a few moments and now gasped in a large mouthful of air. He felt around the edge of the table till he bumped into his chair and barely remembered to turn a bit before he let his weak knees collapse landing him with a hard thump on the seat. He stared at the diary, fear widening his eyes and then causing them to slowly blink.

There was no happy ending. (WOW. Great section. I couldn't read it fast enough! am still not reading fast enough and i keep stoping to write these little remarks. Curse my typos!!)

What if Bilbo had refused to share my hurt about my parents?" Frodo said to the diary. "What if he had, so to speak, shut the cover and put my pain back on the shelf never to be dealt with or soothed? (Another WOW. Tis so true, many are too uncomfortable to "share the hurt" with you. But tis always so comforting to find someone who will!)

A small note here: I have often liked children better than adults. They are not pretentious. They are usually honest (often to the point of rudeness) and they have the most wonderful imaginations! (Ah, don't you just love Bilbo!)

but thought all were dead ( (if only it had been so) (oooh, bilbos poor poor broken heart! )

I am helping her. I am loving her, even if from afar. (oh, i'm so glad! this must help so much to heal his heart)

6 Foreyule, S.R. 1332 ( the whole entry. heart searingly beautiful. sniff!)

Frodo’s splayed hand rested on the open diary. His head rested on his forearm. His body shook with his sobs. (oh my, that is the end? well, i suppose so. How so very very sad. But how wonderful that in some ways he was able to have that remaining time with her and that in the end, he was with her to say good bye. Tis never easy to loose someone, but from experience i can say that it is somehow easier for the heart to heal if there is a time of knowing beforehand, time to say goodbye.)

Beautiful wonderful story Pearl. BIG BIG BRAVOs. Holy cow but i do LOVE your stories. I can't wait to find the time to read more. Today i thought i would read with my lunch, and picked the oldest to read. i'm sure i'll work my way through the rest eventually.

Oh my. This is tragic, utterly tragic! Poor Bilbo...and Amethyst really. I love how Bilbo ended it - "In the morning I woke up". Such an ending! This was really beautiful.

Mine too! *sniff* That was so sad and beautiful.

Author Reply: I'm finally learning my way around this site! Thank you so very much for the generous response, and for the encouragement at LJ. This story was one of those gifts that just popped into my head nearly in-total. My husband, who does my editing, read it through twice to edit it and told me he cried at the end both times.

Thank you again, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
