Indeed a lovely lesson for both of them, and a beginning of a life-long love of the stars. My dad was an astronomer, and my love for mythology grew out of learning the names of the constellations. Author Reply: Well, I've always loved the stars, so I just had to go into astronomy when I 'grew up'. I do like mythology a bit, but I have to admit that though I know a lot of the names of the constellations, I don't really know the full story behind as many of them as I should. I do think that being exposed to astronomy at an early age does help to inspire a life-long love of the stars and a sense of wonder about what might be 'out there'. ;-)

aw...I wish I could see the stars where I live. DAMN YOU, SMOG! And Estel is such a dear little boy. I might just have to hug him. Author Reply: lol Give Estel a hug for me, too. And now that I moved away from the country to the city, I can't see the stars much from where I live, either. Light pollution is a real hindrance to observing. :(

This is lovely Misty. 5 year olds are great aren't they? My Dad has a little boy living next to him who asks "why?" at the end of every answer you give him. Conversations can go on for hours. I love the stars and the patterns they make in the sky. Although I really know very little about them compared to you they are one of the reasons I go camping. London is not the best place to go star-gazing! Can I come on one of your courses? :) Author Reply: I actually wrote this two years ago. My nephew is now seven years old, and quite brilliant. He's already reading Harry Potter and loves to read, draw, and even write his own stories. (He wants to go into art and photography, but write stories just like his Aunt Misty.) I'm getting him into writing quite early, aren't I? ;-) His stories usually include monsters, though. I am also trying to teach him about the stars and astronomy. He lives in the country, in prime star-gazing territory, though I live in the city and can't see the stars here like I used to be able to do at my parent's home. I don't actually teach astronomy anymore, as I was a teaching assistant in graduate school, but I'd be happy to answer any questions I can. :)

Oh I liked this one a lot, especially as someone who loves the stars very much also--the medical field won out over astronomy for me though, but I often wonder where I would be if it hadn't. It was neat reading this with the Elvish names & knowing exactly which constellations & stars you were referring to! I simply loved little Estel wanting to know what would happen if Menelmacar(Orion) shot down the moon. Only a child would think of such a thing--along with stating that “If he has been hunting the same stag that long, he can’t be such a great hunter, Ada. A great hunter would have gotten the stag a long time ago.” LOL!! You even had my user name in it too, partly which I chose because of my love for the night sky & wanted to incorporate that somehow :) Author Reply: I did have fun with this one, coming up with questions that a five year old might have about astronomy and the stories of the constellations. I've loved astronomy since high school, and couldn't imagine going into any other field. When I posted this story, I found out just how many other people love the stars as well!

He glanced down as he felt Estel snuggle in closer. He was nearly asleep. Elrond pulled the blanket up around Estel and glanced up into the sky once more. It was so peaceful out here, with all his old friends keeping watch over him and the young boy that Elrond could not have loved more had he been his own. This is a lovely, gentle story. I learned as much as Estel did! Author Reply: Thank you. I do like sharing my love of the stars and my knowledge with others. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
