Oh, Frodo, how do you do it? I want to cry, or to give Frodo some comfort. I love the way each relationship is described-this is *so* Frodo. But these are the best lines of the story: I toast to Bilbo, but in my mind I also toast the Shire, Merry, Pippin, Sam, Fatty, Folco, and everything I've ever held dear. Farewell, my heart! For I am leaving my heart in the Shire. This is where I belong. I am leaving to do my best to defend it. Someday, somehow, I may return. Until then...farewell. "Farewell, my heart!" *sniff* That sounds just like Tolkien wrote it. Thank you so much, mellon nin, for this heart-rending but beautiful birthday gift. *goes to find that elusive handkerchief* God bless, Galadriel Author Reply: *bowing deeply at waist* Hannon le, mellon nin! I did it by writing how I felt when I moved away and had to keep it a secret. I said goodbye in my heart. I think one of my friends figured it...I'll have to ask her, though. I just wrote what I felt when I moved away, especially that last day, sitting on the hammock, looking out at the picturesque land that had once been my own. I left my heart there. Did you notice one line I used was from a poem I wrote? Namarie, mellon nin! God Bless, Frodo Baggins

Oh! That was very good! I love it! It must have been a hard decision for Frodo to leave all his closest friends like that. Especially Merry, as you pointed out. Lovely story! Glad you had a good birthday, sixteen is a big one! No, I don't think I know that person, but we had staffers from all over the place here. My comittee leader was Samantha Gilbert, I think. She was from Oklahoma. Glad you had a good time! I was thinking about going to the horse camp next year, sounded really awesome! God bless mellon nin! Ellie Author Reply: Wow. I thought I had replied to this. I am finding unanswered reviews all over the place! *shaking head* Hannone le. Yes, it was a hard decision for Frodo to make. I wrote the whole thing from personal experience. Especially the part about not telling your dearest friends that you're leaving, possibly forever. Namarie! God Bless, FrodoBaggins

Well done, indeed! I especially liked the passage about Merry. He has always been like a little brother to Frodo and now he has to leave him -- again! Of course, we all know that there was a conspiracy going on and so *this* farewell was not forever. Happy birthday to you! Author Reply: Why, thank you! :) I know, Merry always did seem like a little brother to Frodo, or at least, that's how I always imagined it. I'm glad for everyone's sake that this farewell was not final. However...poor Frodo when he had to leave the Fellowship. He didn't expect to see them again because he finally knew full force the danger he was facing. And he knew he had to face it alone. Whereas in the SHire, he may have had some sort of hope, whether he realized it or not. Namarie! God BLess, Frodo Baggins

Very nicely done! I love the reflections on Frodo's more neglected (by fanfic) friends, Fatty and Folco. We know so little about them, especially Folco. I like your take on him. Merry and Pippin, of course, knew him rather better than he suspected. Yet he took these farewells in his heart, and meant them. I really like your description of Merry's possible reaction--though of course, we know how he *really* reacted. Frodo feared they would follow him--I am sure that influenced his decision to allow them to go when they made their plans clear to him. He knew if they were not at his side, they would be trailing him, and perhaps in even more danger because of that. Which of course is exactly why he said "yes". I liked this. Author Reply: Hannon le. I do think that Fatty and Folco are neglected by fanfic. Obviously, they were some of Frodo's closest friends because only they and Sam and his cousins were with him at his last night in Bag End. Didn't they also help him move? I'm going to put a lot more of those two in my story "the Forging of the Ringbearer". Yes, Merry and Pip do know him a lot better than he ever suspected. That part also touched me in the book - when Frodo finds out that they plan on going with him. The fact that he expected them to follow him probably did, as you said, influence his decision. Hannon le again. Namarie, God Bless, Frodo Baggins

This is quite a lovely piece exploring Frodo's POV of his his best friends & the reasons he's leaving the Shire on his last night in Bag End. Sam would truly do anything for Frodo whether it be following across the river to Buckland, or to the ends of the earth in Mordor. I also liked how you portrayed the others' relationship with Frodo, but especially Merry's. It Merry hadn't already secretly known that Frodo was leaving, he would have been devastated when his cousin left him again. It all comes full circle at the end--Frodo doesn't want to leave the goodness of the Shire or his dearest friends, but he knows he must, in order to protect them from the growing danger. Well done! Author Reply: Hannon le! I liked doing this piece...even though I didn't have time to edit it. I'm glad it went over well. I thought this would be an interesting part to explore. Thank you again. Hi, I'm at Goldberry's house, so I can't read your story right this moment, but I will review later... Just wanted to stop by and say Happy Birthday, mellon nin!!! Hope it was fun and filled with lots of Hobbits and, of course, TeenPact! Namarie and God bless, Ellie Author Reply: Why hello Ellie at Goldberry's house! How goes it in the Old Forest? LOL! Thank you for the birthday wish. I get to celebrate with my cousins and my family today. I had a blast at TeenPact. Everybody sang "Happy Birthday" and the staff made me a card. It was really sweet. BTW, do you know Boe Surbeck, he's a staffer? Sorry...you might not. I was just wondering, b/c he travels and stuff like that. Anyway, I must go. Namarie, mellon nin! God Bless! Happy birthday, my dear Frodos - both of you! :) Glad to see something more from you. Thank you for all you did. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: *bowing at waist* Why, hannon le, mellon nin! I'm glad to put something out for you to read. You're...welcome. All I did, though? What...do you mean stories? Anyway, you're welcome for whatever I did that you're thanking me for. Namarie, God Bless, Frodo Baggins

Yes, the farewells taken secretly in his heart, only not as secretly as he'd thought, as it turned out. Author Reply: Hannon le for the review. No, it certainly wasn't as secret as he'd thought. This part of the Fellowship always intrigued me. I knew we were moving away months before anyone outside my family knew, and it was so difficult to bear me. That's exactly how I thought Frodo would have felt. Namarie, mellon nin. God Bless, Frodo Baggins
