Fairy Tales of Middle-Earth  by DrummerWench 5 Review(s)

Awwww! how fitting an origin for Beorn and the Beornids! YOur skill at story telling never ceases to amaze me, and I am always delighted to see how many well-known tales of old fit so naturally into Tolkien's world. A sheer delight.

One thing I really liked here was this: When she taught me to talk, I gained also some of the long sight of the Elves. I like what it suggests, not strictly magic but a deeper way of aprehending reality, through the inner, deep meaning of words that somehow helps them "see" the future. A wonderful tip.

The well-known elements from traditional fairy tales seem to work just as well in Middle-Earth settings. The "magic", though has to be pretty subtle to work, I think. Hence the foresight, which I think of as sort of Chess Grand Master like, with only a little magic "telling the future" mixed in.

Aha, a most satisfying story. I find I truly love this tale of how Beorn came to be, and came to be a skinchanger at that.

Author Reply: Thanks! This was actually the first, no, second fairy tale I wrote (maybe I'll post the first one here somewhere one day...). It's one of those that popped into my head fully formed, instead of struggling with plot, character, setting for ages.

A very interesting and unusual origin for the Beornings!

This was a good use of Treebeard's statement about how the Elves woke things up and taught them to talk--in this case, animals rather than trees!

Author Reply: Heh! If I have the opportunity to quote a line, I will! I wondered if anyone would catch it.

I'm not sure how canon this tale is, as when I wrote it, most of my books were in boxes, including, for some reason, all three copies of the Hobbit. But not LOTR...

A wonderful origin for the Beornings.

Author Reply: Thank you, eiluj. I'm glad you liked it. Perhaps I can find an origins tale for the Ents...
