Wow Gryffinjack! I've read one or two of your stories before this, I believe, but the description in this was amazing! "Pippin’s stomach was turning somersaults. His lips were dry and his whole being shook with nervous anticipation of what was to come. There was but little hope of success. In all likelihood, they were marching to their deaths. And when that moment came, there would be no other hobbits with him. But still, if there was the slightest hope it might help Frodo destroy the Ring, then Pippin was determined to do his part." I felt it with him... the physical fear, the lonely isolation, the determination. "The oppressive skies seemed to mirror the mood of the army as it moved slowly toward the ever darkening lands of Mordor. Though Pippin thought it was mid-day, little light penetrated the depths of evil and despair that surrounded them. It might as well have been midnight on a night with no stars. For the grey light was not even bright enough to shimmer off their armour and accoutrements." How perfectly you capture the depression of the darkness. "Hobbits were not meant to be in such places as this. Nobody was." "Each time, Pippin had answered as cheerfully as he could when marching to almost certain doom that he was doing well indeed." "Pippin gasped when he caught his first sight of the Black Gate of Mordor with its heavy iron door. Somewhere inside that evil realm was the most fair and gentle hobbit he had ever known." Ok, enough c/p-ing, I hope you get my meaning. The beauty and power of your description leaves me breathless. I am in awe. Perhaps it is partly because I am working on a story set in the same time period, from a different POV, and have had these events running through my mind for several months now but the aptness of your description of it all... I am so very impressed. Very Well Done! Author Reply: Wow, such a lovely review! Nothing pleases me more than when one of my readers is moved by and felt the emotions of the characters in what I have written. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the descriptions and found them both beautiful and powerful. My heart aches for what each of our hobbits must have been going through at this point in time. Yet somehow, in the midst of all of this evil which will probably destroy them and the world they know, hobbits manage to keep their hope. So you are writing a story set in this period? I shall have to read it! | |
