This is a marvelous glimpse of Halbarad and Aragorn, and how that conversation might have gone down when Aragorn laid the charge to double the Shire guard on Halbarad. I love the quiet humor between the two men, and Aragorn asking Halbarad if he'd marry a woman who chases him with hatchets is a gem! Very much enjoyed this. :)

I Love the interplay between Aragorn and Halbarad. The whole conversation is just ... perfect. Hmm, it fits with my preference for "Fantasy of Manners", too! DrummerWench Author Reply: I do love that repartee! You might try Oshun's "The Princess and the Horselord" at HASA. It's a romance with lots of social interaction and some really great dialog. Poor Halbarad, the things he has to put up with, griping woman and grumbling rangers, no answers to questions concerning hobbits, and a king to be, that has no heir. Author Reply: Yes indeed, Halbarad has his challenges! He does a great job handling all of it, too.

Nice vignette! I loved Halbarad's exasperation at Aragorn's refusal to marry anyone but an Elf-princess whose bride-price is Sauron's defeat and Aragorn's reclaiming of the throne of Gondor. Is Thorbarad named for Thorongil as well as Halbarad? Author Reply: Halbarad is sympathetic to Aragorn's dilemma, but also all too aware of the cost of his choice. Yes, Thorbarad is named for both his father and for Thorongil. He appears in "Theme and Variations" as well. Thanks for reading!

I can see it now--all the eligible Dunedain women and their mothers with hatchets chasing after the Chieftan! With the quick and witty retorts that Aragorn is throwing at Halbarad, it seems that he is prepared for all the "get married" questions that is thrown at him. I enjoyed that conversation. It must be quite irritating and and frustrating for the Rangers to guard and risk their own lives for something that they do not know. Such is a life of a Ranger. I'd rather be amongst the women chasing after Aragorn--but that's me! I enjoyed this lovely piece. I like Thorborad's appearance. Author Reply: Hello, RS It's always a pleasure to hear from you. Yes, I think that by this time in his life Aragorn is quite experienced at fending off marriageable females on the hunt. I would definitely have been in that crowd, too. The Rangers probably grumbled a lot, but they also trusted Aragorn's judgment--and Gandalf's, too, of course. I'm looking forward to hearing from you on the new chapter of "Sword." G.A.

This conversation really does have a ring of truth about it. I was a bit startled by the idea of Halbarad keeping a logbook but then even rangers need to keep some records! Love it that the women frighten our hero even more than grumbling men! Be afraid Aragorn, be very afraid!!! *g* Author Reply: In "The Sword of Elendil," my story of the young Aragorn, there is quite a lot of description of Ranger organization and living standards. You might find it interesting. I think Aragorn could handle the women, but surely they were pretty intimidating....

This is a marvelous conversation, which most certainly must have taken place! “The sooner I leave, the better, then. I’m much more afraid of the women griping than the Rangers grumbling,” he said. Only the gleam in his eye gave away his amusement. I'm sure the Dunedain *were* quite alarmed at the fact that Aragorn remained unmarried, and always walking into danger! Author Reply: They must have been! They certainly had good reasons to be dubious that he would accomplish his goal!
