Wai wai wai wai wait, that was all just a dream? I just re-read this. Ack now I'm as confused as Frodo! Author Reply: Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. In this ending, it was. Just sent you the alternate ending. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

I prefer the original ending. For one thing, it is clear when the dream switches to reality with the name "Smeagol" popping up, and to think that the Quest isn't over yet is even harder than knowing it is...but also plenty of room for hope. Death is too final to have much hope in it, and it is too unfair to Sam. Still, thank you for sharing! Author Reply: You are welcome! I prefer the ending I first posted also since this other one is just too depressing. Death is just a step to another life. I cannot say it as beautifully as Aragorn said it to Arwen but there is hope. It's just we can't see it at the time it happens. But you are right, the other is better. Woah! Definitely too angsty for me this time. But after re-reading the first part you leave us a question - what happens to Sauron? Author Reply: Well I suppose that would be determined by what is dream and what is reality? Was Frodo really possessed and his waking up in Bag End a dream and when he reverted back to his nightmare reality, he couldn't bear it and died? Then I think Sauron would have abandoned him and found another host and I don't even want to think about that because there was only one nearby. Or was the thought of being posessed the nightmare and when he woke only for a moment and then was dragged back, he couldn't bear that and died. Did he die in a cell in Minas Tirith or his own bed? Did Sam bury him in a garden there or the garden at Bag End? Were there hundreds of miles to go for him to return home or only a few steps down the Row? I tried to be as vague as possible just to leave it open just to leave food for thought. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

A rather shocking AU, and I'm SO glad it didn't happen. To fall into that level of madness would be more than I could stand, I fear. Author Reply: I'm very glad too! I just couldn't do that to Frodo when I posted it first so devised another way. But was it madness or reality? Was he truly possessed or just tormented with a terrible nightmare? The story as I first posted it makes it clear it was all a torment from the Ring but this other ending I tried to leave unclear. I wondered if this was the nightmare that had Frodo crying out softly that woke Sam just when Smeagol was about to convert back to the light, though I didn't post it that way. But I do wonder. Yes, this would be extraordinarily frustrating as the Ring seeks to pervert Frodo's very consciousness so he can no longer tell dream from reality, seeking to convince him of demonic possession.

Oh, man, Antane! That is so sad, so sad! "...knowing he would never have an answer." *tears* No wonder you decided to end it differently and I'm so glad you did. God bless, Galadriel Author Reply: I just couldn't do that to our dear when I first posted it, after having put him through all that other torment. But at last you can see how it was originally written. I am very glad to if didn't come to this. Namarie, God bless, Melinyel, Antane :)
