The Tenant from Staddle  by Larner 10 Review(s)

I love this chapter...Petunia is my favorite of your hobbits and this helps me to think that one day I too will be recognized as the pretty, grown up one in my family. (but with 3 older sisters that might take a while.)
On a side note, I went to Amish Country with my family yesterday and I am now drinking the ginger beer I got there! (It's a bit spicy but I like it, I see now why Ricki always wants to have some!)

I so love scenes with the Bracegirdle family! Especially with something melting within dear Bartolo. I don't envy Delphie, though - her family is quite a handful. If Begonia were my daughter, I'd have pulled out all my remaining hair by now. Petunia is a very sweet lass, though.

Author Reply: I'm glad you do, Soledad. I find I love them, too. Five children would be a handful for any parent, I think. Sometimes our two and a half were more than we could handle. And even Begonia has her good points--she just doesn't yet believe she should think on them seriously, I fear.

Glad you share my opinion of Petunia. I quite like her myself.

What a gorgeous depiction of hobbits preparing for a journey, with the food and the hot bricks for warmth.

I love Delphie and the children - especially Petunia suddenly looking grown-up and reminding Delphie of her own mother - but oh that Barti! What a cheapskate! I love the way his wife treats him - she knows exactly what he is like (and loves him nonetheless).

Author Reply: Ah, yes, Delphie DOES know her Bartolo, and as you say, loves him as much because of his vulnerabilities as in spite of them. Thank you for the comments, BB.

Heh, children will be children, won't they? And Bartolo not quite suggesting a cheap, tacky wedding present - some things never change!

Good to see an update, and looking forward to the wedding!

Author Reply: Some husbands are cheap, and the children ARE children after all!

And hope to have the wedding posted soon.

Ah, the fun of mobilizing a family! I can just picture it, well done! And I hope you get your long story chapters back in line ... talk to them firmly and let them know you won't be intimidated :)

Author Reply: There were four of us while we were growing up, with my older brother twelve years older than our younger one. We had LOTS of scenes like this!

As for the chapters--they have been eking their ways out so slowly! Heh!

It is just amazing to think that Elrond can remember so far back!Very wise of the Hobbits to use hot bricks to keep warm!

Author Reply: When you remember that Elrond and Elros were born toward the end of the First Age, that gives Elrond over six thousand years of memories! And the hot bricks were commonly used in carriages, and even carried in ladies' muffs--it was fun to write!

Thanks so, Linda.

Poor Lindor will be busy for quite a while to make all these copies. Though these family trees and pieces of history are a great idea, and I am sure some of the Hobbits will be very interested. I’d not even be surprised if the Travellers will go and try to find out more about their ancestors *before* the Shire was founded. From what Lindor said, the papers should be enough to send them asking in Imladris.

Barti with his reluctance to go to the wedding and his ideas about a proper gift made me snicker, as usual. Really, the best thing he ever did was marrying Delphie!
And why do I get the feeling girls don’t have changed much since the Ring War? *grin*

Now I look forward to the wedding!

Author Reply: Well, it is said in the Appendices that Merry DID study in the library and archives of Rivendell, so it is possible he might indeed be looking at many of the records there; and he might also have studied Bilbo and Frodo's library as well, if as I suggest Bilbo had begged Elrond to send him anything he might have of Hobbits coming over the passes. He might even find things Gerontius had gathered in the Great Smials as well.

Oh, I find I quite like Barti's situation. He doesn't really want to go, but would rather go to it than to a banquet to honor Frodo; then hopes to duck out on it anyway, and has to be bullied. And by this time Delphinium has his number thoroughly!

And I bet the very first girls were much the same as current ones! No, we don't appear to have changed all that much in recorded history, after all!

And I, too, am looking forward to the wedding. Heh!

I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't seen a chapter of this recently and here one is! But *shudders and more shudders* to think of hobbits taken alive by the Enemy...ick, ick, ick!

Namarie, God bless, Antane

Author Reply: I finally kicked the muse in the rump, and this chapter finished itself, and I'm better than half done with the next one, I think.

As for Hobbits being carried off alive for any reason, including orc breeding stock--well, I've played with that idea in "Stirring Rings." I agree--ick, ick, ick!

Thanks so much, Antane.

Oh goodness! How lovely to see a new chapter!

I do so love Delphinium's deft, subtle, but firm, handling of her prickly Bracegirdle husband, LOL! She just plows ahead with the plans, knowing that he'll have to give in or risk long and tedious argument from the kids, who are taking it all for granted!

*grin* I really like Delphie.

Author Reply: Yes, Delphie knows how to deal with her Bartolo--and he wouldn't live half as happily and well if she hadn't learned to do so. I find I like her, too.

I am so pleased that you have managed to get another chapter written. I want to go to the wedding too - oh, wait....you are taking us all there! :)

Off on my own trip in a few days time to France. Lourdes and then up the coast to camp. Looking forward to it but will be out of internet range!

Author Reply: Yes, the wedding is coming up, and I hope soon. This next chapter is writing itself, so hopefully it will be posted once you get home.

I've always promised that I'll visit the Isle of Jersey once again one day. I hope it will be in the next ten years. And I hope you'll catch the last two chapters in 'Neath Anor, Ithil, and Gil.
