Four of a Kind  by Grey Wonderer 12 Review(s)

I love you how 'bind' your tales together - makes them ever more fun to read.

Author Reply: Thank you. I like the stories to connect in some way when possible. I'm glad you enjoy that about them. Thank you so much for reading these.

These are just beautiful, G.W.! I loved each and every tale about being left behind. I have an older sister, so I can empathise with these wee ones from my days of childhood. I do have to say that I really liked Pippin's tale; he *is* too smart for his own -good, isn't he? :-)

PF

Author Reply: I was the older sister so I guess I'd be Frodo or Merry in these. I am very glad that you enjoyed them. Pip is too smart for his own good. I am very certain that is at least half of how he gets his way so very often. hehehe

Oh - they are all so sweet. And each of them showing his own nature in the way he responds to being left behind. Sam so protective - Merry defiant and huffy - Frodo distracted by the joys of literature and Pippin irrepressible. And surprisingly understanding. And I love the way Frodo reminds Merry of his earlier words.

Author Reply: I believe that Merry found out that what you say can come back to haunt you. LOL I'm glad you enjoyed this and thank you for the lovely review.

These are so sweet! I love that you had Pip knowing what was going on :-) It's hard to always be the one left behind and you caught that beautifully. MEWD, GW!

Author Reply: Thank you! I suspect that Pippin knew because as the youngest, he'd had the most practice at being 'too young to come along.' Besides, he had to have learned a thing or two from all of those older sisters and cousins. hehehe

I did this one because I think all of the others must have gone through this too. Pippin, most of all, but each of them in turn had to want to go with someone older and been refused. I enjoyed letting Frodo have a turn at being 'youngest' in this one, but for once, I think Sam was my favorite to write!

Oh, I liked these! I especially liked meeting Sam's older brothers and finding out how nice they were, and of course Pippin's buttons were the GW signature: perfectly adorable! You have a magic touch when it comes to kids--just wonderful!

Author Reply: Thank you! I can't imagine Sam not having nice older brothers since Sam is such a sweet-natured hobbit. You do have to write Sam very young in order to get them into the picture though.

With all of his rushing about to keep up, I can imagine Pippin not taking time for buttons. He must have been one of those little ones that always turns up needing to be 're-dressed' before you can leave with him. And I suspect that all of those older sisters straightened and button him so often that he didn't worry about it much. LOL Thank you for the review and I am glad that you enjoyed it!

“I seem to recall a time when you told me that if someone younger than you wanted to come along with you, that you’d bring them. You said you wouldn’t be like me and leave them behind,” Frodo smiled.

LOL!!! Somehow I knew that this would happen! But instead of leaving Merry alone with his problem, Frodo helps him out. That's our Frodo! Wonderful!

Author Reply: I could just hearing Merry arguing his case to Frodo and then later regretting his words. I'm glad you enjoyed that part. I thought it was a fun way to connect the two chapters. I imagine Frodo was tempted to leave Merry to his mess but decided to help out after remembering his own troubles with getting time alone when Merry was small. Thank you for reviewing!

These are delightful. Bell and Primula are such a wise mothers. Each knows just how to sooth her son's feelings. I love the continuity in the last two and how Frodo uses the much same technique on Pippin that his mother used to make him fell better.

Author Reply: Thank you! I think Frodo must have been very good and sorting out his little cousin's troubles at that point and I like to think that he did use some of his mother's lessons even though he lost her far too soon. Thank you for reading and reviewing and I am glad that you liked these.

Your take on the lads is just adorable, and I loved how each one was dealt with differently in matter of "going along". I loved the way both Bell and Primula knew their sons so well, and could get them over being left.

And Merry was so funny with Frodo, pretending like he'd have something more important to do with Berilac.

Pippin? Well, Pippin's a good deal sharper than anyone gives him credit for, he is! LOL!

Author Reply: I had fun writing Frodo as a younger lad. He is always the older one in my tales so it was nice to let him be the little one for a change.
I could see Sam as being eager to please his mother and to help out. It seemed such a 'Sam thing' to me.
And Merry would have had to be the sort that hated to admit disappointment for any reason. I could see him trying his best to cover that up at least while talking to Frodo.
Things like buttons might have troubled Pippin but I think he was very clever when it came to keeping up with his older cousins. He must have learned how to 'work them' early on. hehehe

Oh, yes, our lads indeed, and Pippin already has Merry all figured out. Too clever by half, our Peregrin is, but we love him for it.

Author Reply: A bit of fluff for the weekend. LOL
I think that having followed all of his older sisters and cousins about Pippin was bound to have picked up a thing or two, even if he wasn't certain about those darn buttons.

GamgeeFestReviewed Chapter: 2 on 2/10/2007
Awwww! The fluffiness! *hugs all the wee hobbits* Those were some good distraction tactics that Bell and Primula used. I love that Sam was a 'hero' at such a young age, and of course Frodo would much rather read a book than go out and play with the other kids. ;) Merry was just so very Merry and I love that he had to eat his words later. Pippin and his buttons were adorable.

Author Reply: I don't write Bell or Primula often so I am glad they turned out well. As to Sam, I could see him being a little helper around the home at a very early age. He just seems to be that type of personality that worries about others and wants to help if he can. I thought Frodo's love a books might just ease his anger at being left by the 'older lads'. I also had fun writing Frodo as the younger child for a change. As to Merry, I always make hi stubborn in some way. LOL
I could see Pippin always in a hurry to keep up and never allowing himself time to 'figure out his buttons'. Thanks for reading!
