Legolas and Gimli - the greatest friendship that has ever been. And a wonderfully sad, touching story. Author Reply: Thank you so much, Soledad! It was a lovely surprise to see your review in my inbox. I'm glad you enjoyed the story - I too love to read about the friendship between Legolas and Gimli. I really appreciate your kind words :-)

I remember reading this before Dot and being very moved by it. I can't understand why I didn't review it but, then, I used to be a bit of a closet reader and rather shy of breaking cover to review. Now I have just come across it again browsing through your stories and you had me in tears again so I just had to tell you. Author Reply: Wow, harrowcat, thank you so much. It’s such a lovely surprise to get a review for an old story. That you liked this enough to re-read it and to let me know what you thought means the world to me. Thank you.

I dearly love the friendship between Legolas and Gimli, built in spite of so much distrust and differences! This is a such a wonderful picture of that friendship, viewed in a time of need. The stories of the good times are easy...it's when trial and pain and need are foremost that the telling involves more care. You've done a wonderful job again, Dot, catching the emotions of the moment, starting with Legolas' unease in Minas Tirith brought on by Gimli's suffering. I like the way you have Legolas waiting in the tree, and not trying to go where he doesn't feel capable of understanding or helping. The vision of Gimli with his father, holding his hand and crying was heartbreaking. I lost my father a little over a year ago, and I remember well going up to the funeral home and sitting there in a daze. You are quite right, it's only later that the grieving ones remember who came and offered support. Arwen and Aragorn showing up for the funeral was very heartening, both for Gimli, and I think, Legolas. Perhaps most encouraging, though, is the knowledge that, at the end, Gimli has Legolas right beside him to hold him when he weeps, and take care of him during the hard days after the funeral. Such a sad, lovely story, Dot. Thanks for sharing. linda Author Reply: What a lovely, long review! I can’t remember why, but it dawned on me one day that Gloin would have died at some stage and I didn’t think I’d ever seen that done before. I really wanted to convey the idea that Legolas desperately wanted to help Gimli but that at the same time he just wasn’t sure how, because I think it’s a feeling of helplessness that we all know. I’m really glad you think that it came across successfully. I debated about how to handle Gimli’s grief so the fact that you found you could relate to it really touched me. Linda, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you letting me know what you think. You’re so encouraging. :-)

((*sniff*)) That was wonderful! I've never been an advocate of burning dead Elves, but the rest was so great that I don't really mind! Poor Gimli, but it had to happen sooner or later. What a great friend Legolas is. And he certainly would not be a stranger to death, as many seem to assume. I mean, after all, he lives in Mirkwood. Very, very nice; an addition to the Favorites File. :)
