Oh my! A very long time has passed since I last heard that story! I did not know that it was originally English. In German it is called "Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt", and "Nimmersatt" means nothing else but "STILL VERY HUNGRY" ;-) My favorite part of your hobbity version was when the caterpillar crawled into Gimli's beard and thus came to Gondor. And it built its cocoon on the 22nd of Halimath? That tells a lot! Thank you very much :) Author Reply: Guten Tag, Andrea! Ohh, I learned a new German word!! I took German for 3 years in high school, but we did not learn the word Nimmersatt. I distinctly remember der Hunger though, as we used to use it around when the bell announcing lunch would ring, specifically: Ich habe Hunger. LOL! The part with Gimli's beard was a lot of fun to write and one of my favorite parts too. Thank you for reading/reviewing, Andrea! ~Elemmírë~

Please forgive this little AU of an ending of the tale: And then the butterfly came abroad the Elven ship when Sam sailed and Frodo saw it and his beloved brother once more and all lived happily ever after. :) What a lovely, fun story, my dear! I don't know the original but I love what you did with it! Poor Frodo having chickenpox - been there, done that, I might still have my first scar, my grandparents gave me a get well card about all the things you could do in bed and they drew spots all over the girl's face. I did ache out loud to hear he had been afflicted too. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Mae govannen, Antane. LOL! Scroll down and read my reply to Larner! Next time you're in a bookstore, look for The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle in the childrens' section. It's a much-beloved story for years now and nearly every bookstore still carries it. I guarantee that you'll fall in love with the original story along with its bright illustrations. Speaking of Frodo and chickenpox, my rampant ever-thinking mind has come up with a new plot bunny regarding that, save it involves Pippin and Frodo as an older child. It keeps nagging at me, so I think one of these days I will just have to sit down and start typing. I'm glad you enjoyed, Antane! Namarie, ~Elemmírë~

Aha! I think Carle would be impressed to see how his story has managed to become part of even Shire tradition--nay, a tradition throughout Arda! But at least Sam will be able to share the tale of how the tale has grown with Frodo. Author Reply: One can only hope! Do you suppose Carle is a Tolkien fan? Hmm, I can picture Frodo and Sam sitting together again at last underneath a mallorn in the Blessed Realm .... Sam reciting the fully-expanded version of the hungry caterpillar much to Frodo's amazement. Then again, who knows ... perhaps Elanor will alter the story so that the very hungry caterpillar inches his way onto the Elven ship and heads West at the side of the Ringbearer, where he lays in catharsis until reaching White shores where he flies off the ship as a beautiful butterfly--much like Frodo himself. Thank you for reading/reviewing, Larner, and I'm glad you enjoyed. ~Elemmírë~

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is a perfect tale for hobbits, and your additions worked well (though the rotten potato had me worried for a bit). Good job! Author Reply: Thank you very much, eiluj! I tried to rework some of the hungry caterpillar's "meals" to fit better into the Shire. The rotten potato was in tribute to the Gaffer's prized tater crop (except that one didn't make it to the table). ~Elemmírë~

Oh what a delightful and wonderful retelling of one of my favourite stories by the characters of my most favourite story! Brilliant Elemmire. You are so clever! Author Reply: Hi Harrowcat! You're making me blush with such praise! The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of my staple favorite stories from childhood. When I was reminded of it in the bookstore a few months ago, I flipped through its illustrated pages in fond remembrance. As I read, it suddenly struck me as being a very hobbity story. The idea I came up with for a fic has been waiting in my personal plot bunny list; I'm glad Marigold finally gave/challenged me with the grounds to write it. As always, thank you for reading/reviewing. I'm really glad that you enjoyed it! ~Elemmírë~
