Sure Footing  by SlightlyTookish 4 Review(s)

That sounds a dangerous adventure - and reminds me of the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dyke. But if ever there was a hobbit who could cross and elf's rope bridge, guaranteed Pippin would be that hobbit!

Author Reply: You are the second person to refer to the little Dutch boy! I'm not familiar with the story, but now I feel as if I should read it, if only to understand these references! Thank you for reading :)

What a tale Pippin. The story of the little Dutch boy with his thumb stuck in the dyke comes to mind. Great contrast of mood with Frodo's reaction in the last paragraph. I often wonder how Aragorn felt about leaving the Shire and Bree etc unattended when his Northern Kin caught up with him. He is a Ranger first and foremost after all.

Author Reply: Thank you for reading! I'm not familiar with the story of the little Dutch boy. My main concern here was to show Pippin "proving his mettle" just a few months before he leaves the Shire with his cousins. I'm very glad you enjoyed the little glimpse of Frodo at the end, I wanted to offer a contrast to the comfortable, happy Frodo we see reading in the library earlier in the story.

That's quite the story to tell, and quite the adventure to have lived through. Looking at all the water in my yard from the almost interminible rains we've been experiencing, I certainly appreciate what Pippin must have felt.

Author Reply: I wanted to tell a two-fold story: one that showed a mature Pippin just before the Quest and one that showed a close relationship between Pippin and Paladin. And then I've been trying to write something about the Fellowship crossing the Silverlode for over two years now! It just seemed to fit with this one. Thanks for reading, Larner!
