Ah, what that slate and slate pencil managed to set in motion! Yes, a Gamgee knows how to read and write, and it's proving right useful indeed! Heh!

*g* Just the right way to get around the Gaffer! Loved this picture of him as the gardener and, of course, little Sam.

This was lovely. It was a treat to see the Gamgee family all together. Little Sam reciting to his gaffer the gardening rhymes he had learned from Bilbo was precious and absolutely perfect for this story. I'm glad that the Gaffer came to realize that useful things could be learned from books and that Sam was able to keep the slate and learn his letters. Bilbo's gifts certainly do go beyond the surface.

This is sweet and very fitting. It makes perfect sense than Hamfast would not take right away to book learning, but gives in when he realizes it's not just for gentlehobbits. I love how little Sam is respectful and cheery, even when his present is taken away. The writing is wonderful, the dialogue delightful. I enjoyed it very much!
