Dear Linaewen: You have done a very good job of exploring the relationship between young Boromir and "Thorongil." That was an inspired idea, as Aragorn might have known Denethor's elder son when the latter was a small child. Your line about the look of pain that crossed Aragorn's face when adult Boromir looked at him, apparently without recognition, was poignant. This story was very well written. Thanks for posting it. Sincerely, Darkover

Nice! You've linked the characters together very well. I would have loved to see Boromir's face after Aragorn said that last line to him. Author Reply: I would have loved for Boromir to have heard that, too. Maybe he would have remembered! I wonder what kind of difference it would have made if he had...? Thank you so much for your lovely words!

Delightful! I enjoyed this quite a bit, and it is a great connection between the two different times. Sometimes I wonder if Boromir ever discovered who Aragorn was, once long ago. But I enjoyed this story quite a bit; it was a lovely ficlet to read. Author Reply: I wonder, too. Perhaps he did, and that is one reason why he was so perturbed when Aragorn seemed to be delaying going to Minas Tirith. Thank you for your encouraging review!

Oh my goodness, you have me in tears. Especially those last lines of Aragorn's. Having a grandchild now - I look at her and remember all the wonderful times with her mother.... and pray that her mother remembers them too. A beautiful telling. Author Reply: Thanks so much! I do think Boromir would have eventually remembered, given time and the right circumstances. I like to imagine a scenario where Boromir is recalling that special memory and suddenly all the pieces fall into place. :-)

I really like this piece - Getting into the mind of "lesser" characters is a rare thing. I also sometimes find it hard to remember that Aragorn was already well along in age at the time of the Council. He just don't look a day over 30 ! Author Reply: Thank you! It was interesting trying to get a handle on a "younger" Aragorn, doing things we only get a glimpse of in the story. You are right, I seldom think about how old he really is!

I loved this idea that Thorongil had known Boromir as a very young child in Minas Tirith, and that perhaps the adult Boromir might remember him, at least in some small way. I like how you've connected it with the sword like this. One must also pity Denethor too - it had to be hard to have a rival for your father's affections. One wonders what Ecthelion might have thought if he had known who Thorongil really was. Perhaps he did know. Author Reply: I wonder, too, if Ecthelion did know? Even so, it really was hard for Denethor to play second fiddle, when he should have been first chair! I think Boromir would have remembered eventually and made the connection between Aragorn and Thorongil, if there had been more time... Thanks for your lovely words!

Ah, the grief that Boromir now doubts what he as a child believed implicitly. And the recognition isn't yet there--not yet. Yet, in the end he will give the keeping of his city and land into the keeping of those hands, the defense to the wielding of that sword.... Glad to see this told. Author Reply: Thank you so much. That is the pathos of this situation exactly -- that Boromir would forget and be unable to believe. I have often wished Boromir could have made the connection between Aragorn and Thorongil, I wonder if it would have helped him have more hope? Even so, in the end, whether he made the connection or not, he trusted Aragorn and his sword again in the same way, and that must have made Aragorn feel more at peace.

Frongil! Omigosh, how adorable. What a masterful way to link these two men, one retaining only a hazy dream-like memory, and the other remembering things all too clearly. And you left us all to imagine "what happens next" in our own ways. Beautiful story. Author Reply: Thank you! My son when he was two years old spoke just like that, lol! I have always felt a wee bit sad for Aragorn, remembering so clearly and yet not really being able to say anything -- and then losing the opportunity. I suspect he would have eventually revealed himself, though!

You.made.me.CRY. :) That was AMAZING Linaewen! Baby!Boromir and *Young*!Aragorn... LOVE it! How precious was that!?!? I love the exchange between them when Boromir was little... I'll be he was just that smart! And to bring it full circle.. wow. You've got a real winner in this one, Lin. I am impressed. God Bless, Dayna Author Reply: Thanks so much for your encouraging words! I really can imagine wee!Boromir talking like that; my son was just as precocious when he was 2 years old, so I had some real-life memories to fall back on in my research for that. ;-)
