| Paladin was struck by how serious Pippin looked, and how brave and mature he had become. “It would not be a burden,” he said quietly. “You are never a burden, Pippin. And whenever you are ready to talk, your mother and I will be there to listen.” That passage brought a tear to my eye! I, too, believe that Paladin struggled to understand Pippin's nightmares once he saw how they affected his son. I imagine that father and son were very close throughout their lives and I think this lovely passage brings out that indomitable love, and also demonstrates how Paladin could indeed "let go". | I like understanding-Paladin. Although Pippin should note that his parents have to know before they can understand. At least to a certain degree. And Pippin will be better with Merry for a while - and they will both be better away from the crowded Great Smials and Brandy Hall. Author Reply: Thanks for reading! | |

| Two corrections--at Yule Frodo was apparently still at the Cottons' place, as he didn't move back to Bag End until late March at the earliest (certainly not before March 14th); and the keys were given to Merry and ME, not Merry and I. The teacher in me cringes at mistakes like that--please forgive me. A wonderful look at how Paladin might have become aware of the nightmares, and his realization that the lads needed one another to get through the recovery from the more traumatic aspects of their experiences. I, too, see the same rationale for why Merry and Pippin moved out of their respective homes to take up residence in Crickhollow as they did and why Frodo gave them the keys to the place. Although I personally believe part of the reason Frodo did so had to do with the fact he was all too aware that they, too, had nightmares as he undoubtedly did, too. The description of Paladin overhearing part of Pippin's nightmare was very well written and compelling. Excellent! Author Reply: Thanks - I usually catch the me v. I mistakes but this one slipped by. As for whether Frodo knew about the nightmares or not, I did actually say that while Merry and Pippin hadn't explicitly told their cousin about their nightmares, Pippin at least suspected that Frodo knew about them. As he says to his father, “It would hurt Frodo dearly if he knew about them, and he would blame himself for our suffering. But I do think he has some idea of them.” Since I personally think that Merry and Pippin would not want to burden Frodo with any more pain, I think they definitely would have kept any and all details under wraps. I'm glad you liked Paladin here - I've grown very fond of him! | |
