Are You Going To Leave Me?  by Llinos 8 Review(s)

Bergil is a good lad. Those two soldiers . . . and yet, how were they to know who these pherinnath are.

Pippin's dilemma here is very well done, and the two litter bearers are so appropriately blasé - they have seen so much death and suffering that it is hard for them to feel moved by yet another wounded soldier. That Trwystan's focus is more on Shadowfax than Merry really bears this out.

I love the way that Éomer has taken Merry to his heart as a Rider of Rohan - he is truly noble and wise for his years; now, having been proven wrong about Merry's worth, nothing will stand in the way of his finding this hero of the Rohirrim healing and the honour that he deserves. From your portrayal of Éomer it is easy to see why Merry remained devoted to Rohan even though Théoden is dead.

This was just chilling: "Will he find my grave at last?" Tears trickled down Merry's face, "I have longed for it to bring me peace. Do not let Pippin grieve, for he is of the living and I belong with the dead." That sums up the state of Merry's suffering so completely!

It was very nice to see the interaction between Pippin and Éomer in this chapter; we don't often see them interacting, but they both share a common fear here, and I especially liked that Éomer did not try to ease Pippin's fears with empty assurances, but spoke to him like an adult. That is something that is very noticable in this story - Merry and Pippin *are* adults, and you write them as such. So many fanfics portray them too childishly in an attempt to emphasise their differences to other races, but you manage to write them as the adults that they are and yet don't lose the hobbity quality of their innocence. Well done!

Yes, Eomer sees to his debt to Merry, and reassures Pippin at the same time. Now, Aragorn, get that athelas ready for one more suffering from the Black Breath....

Author Reply: Ah yes Larner, the healing hands of the King. But maybe Merry needs a little more than that! :-)

His voice was muted and defeated. "Pippin? Are they going to bury me?"

"No, indeed!" Pippin took Merry's face in his hands and spoke quietly but firmly, "they are going to heal you, I promise!"

Awww! *sniff, sniff...sigh* I'm so glad you got this bit in there. It compliments everything else you have so far. :-)

Éomer, ignoring the faint protests of Trwystan and Gwirion, gently scooped Merry up into his arms, cradling his head against his mighty chest. "Be at peace Rider of Rohan," he spoke firmly to Merry's incoherent murmurings, "Lord Aragorn is within and he has brought succour to my sister, just as he will to you."

I was so waiting for this scene! The image of Éomer carefully taking beloved Merry into his arms was beautiful...just beautiful. Merry's own despair is heart-wrenching - and poor Pippin is so worried about him.

Brilliant story! There *has* to be more coming...right?

I was waiting for this scene too - that's why it just had to be written!

Thanks for reviewing. More is on the way!

Thank heavens for Eomer! I was not certain what Pippin was going to do. Those first two were really no help at all save to get Merry down from Shadowfax. In fact, they seemed more concerned about Shadowfax than about Merry. I love the intelligence of Shadowfax. He is such a lovely character in his own right. Beautifully done and now Eomer and Pippin will be able to see to it that Merry gets proper attention.

Author Reply: Hi GW,

To be honest, private joke between me and me and any Welsh speakers who happen to be reading, Trwystan and Gwirion's names are Welsh for "awkward" and "silly". Oh except Trwystan has an extra "y", it should be "trwstan".

Shadowfax really does know his business, doesn't he!

Thanks for reviewing, more soon.
