I enjoyed this. It is nice to see Denethor as a loving father. By the way... "Denethor placed the heavy object in Faramir's hands, "This present is from me to you, my son, on your 13th birthday." In a flash, Faramir withdrew a gleaming lute, shining and spanking new." Lutes are VERY light. Like a bubble made of wood. Author Reply: Hi Spinster. It's been years since I've posted LOTR fanfic, so thank you so much for your review of this oldie but goodie. I am not a musician, so I appreciate your technical input regarding lutes.

Ah, lovely lovely. Big Brash Boromir, and sweet thoughtful Faramir. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for the depiction of Denethor. I like to think that he really did love his younger son. Maybe because I'm a younger daughter, 5 years younger than my sister, and our dad could be as coldly correct as Denethor at times, but I know he loved us both. So thanks, I like the wise loving Denethor here. Author Reply: Hi Chibi !! How are you doing? Thanks for reading 13th Birthday. It was a labor of love. I'm currently working on a ghost story, "Dead Man's Gift," that further explores the Faramir/Denethor relationship, even though Denny is long gone. I've more or less decided what was the wedge that cracked apart Denethor and Faramir (Steffverse only, of course). But that seems to be coming out in the stories I've written since 13th Birthday. I really appreciate your reading and supporting my efforts through the years. - Steff

Interesting beginning. The 13 year old Faramir is very well characterized. Author Reply: Thanks, Celebne. I hope you stick with 13th Birthday. I suspect you might enjoy the rest of the events on this important day for Faramir.

Nasty pagan custom? Oh, dear. Glad there is love expressed that day. Author Reply: Hee hee. Thanks, Larner. Well, ya know, Denethor had a reputation to keep with his sons, thus the "nasty pagan custom" quip. - Steff Author Reply: Hee hee. Thanks, Larner. Oh what a WONDERFUL story Stefania! I LOVE Faramir stories, and when it's the brothers together, AND younger... holy cow, where's a swoon pillow, quick! :) I love the interplay between the boys, and how you captured their individualisms so well: Boromir the "playboy" heir, and Faramir the pragmatic dreamer. And... nasty pagan custom indeed! LOL Well written and left to imagination, my dear. But my FAVORITE part has to be between Faramir and Denethor. I love the fact you decided to show how he truly does love his youngest, and how early on the 'madness' crept into his life. It's something Faramir always saw in his Father, and the fact that he knew so young just makes LOTR so much more meaningful in the fullness of story. Thank you for letting a tiny baby bunny drag you to your keyboard... we very much appreciate it! God Bless, Dayna Author Reply: Thank you so much, Daynawayna (love your name, BTW) Some months ago I read a fanzine devoted to Faramir/Boromir stories, called the BOGzine. There were many good stories, most of which were by authors who also are archived here. I was inspired by the "zine" but it wasn't until recently that the bunny bit me to tell of their lives in the Steffverse. I'm glad that your favorite part was Denethor and Faramir. It's my favorite, too. I firmly believe there was great love between them even at the end of Denethor's days, as illustrated in both Bookverse and Movieverse. But somehow something or someone got in between them. Denethor's real gift isn't a lute or his first adult riding horse. It's the Numenorean gift of farsight. That's why Denny and Faz must maintain a truthful relationship at all times. They see right through each other. In the Steffverse, of course. Thanks for reading, - Steff

Oh, what a fine closing chapter! "...that something else was as well". Haha! I loved this! What a shame he couldn`t use "it"! (But he used his hands, lol!) This was delicious. Please, do write more, something, anything. I simply like your writintg. Thanks, Irene Author Reply: Thanks for your ongoing support, Irene. It really encourages me. I am going to try to get my lingering chapter of "Avoidance" up by this time next week. Meantime, 13th Birthday is proof that I can finish something that I started. Oh, and you said: "What a shame he couldn`t use "it"! (But he used his hands, lol!)" What Faramir did with the prostitute is up to everyone's imagination--much more fun than my explicitly telling you what they were doing. I can think of a number of things, including "just looking." I'd love to hear people's interpretations of what happened with Faramir and the prostitute, as long as ya keep it PG-13, of course. - Steff

Nice to read you again! Promising story,I hope you won't abandon it again like 'Avoidance' (sigh). I like your clever writing very much. Thumbs up! Author Reply: Thanks, Irene. It's good to hear from you again, too. I am about to write the finishing chapter of 13th Birthday soon as I finish this letter. It was always planned to be short, just covering a day in the lives of the Stewards' sons. And don't lose hope for Avoidance. I've got about 6 pages of a new chapter sitting around. My fanfic muse has come back, so I hope to get back to the big one shortly. - Steff

A fun outing for the birthday boy - I like the concept of spendthrift, generous-hearted Boromir, though it fits more, I think, with movie-Boromir than his book counterpart. I loved the part where Faramir was surprised at his voice suddenly going baritone, then it returning to the usual higher pitch. And I'm so glad Boromir bought him a fine big horse... More soon, I hope. Author Reply: Raksha, you said: "spendthrift, generous-hearted Boromir, though it fits more, I think, with movie-Boromir than his book counterpart." First of all, I welcome anyone reading this story to imagine the sons of the Steward (and the Steward himself) any way they want. My never-ending "Avoidance" story casts Jackson's actors to fill gaps in Tolkien's (and Jackson's) story. So I readily admit that my 18 year old Boromir will grow up to be Sean Bean's Boromir.I never really liked book Boromir. Movie Boromir is so much more fun. The next chapter should end the tale with an exploration of Boromir's tavern and the appearance of the Steward, himself. (Steff does Denethor for the first time.)

The drinking restrictions are reasonable. But Boromir intends to let Faramir see MORE of the place? Now, just how adult does he feel his brother is at thirteen? And I can understand Denethor's concern at Boromir's profligacy. Author Reply: Hi Larner - All I can say is, "hee hee." I wrestled with the thought of putting drinking laws into place in Gondor. People in western civilizations two or three centuries ago had very different attitudes toward, ahem, spirits, than we do. I do know that on sailing vessels in the 18th century, the young cabin boys had as much access to the rum as the old salts. But what about Europe of 1000 AD, which I go to as a guideline for my Tolkien fanfic? I wasn't sure. Finally I thought, it would be fun if Boromir got Faramir to violate their dad's own rules. What older sibling hasn't gotten the kid brother or sister in trouble in that way!! - Steff

I like the way you portray the brother's differences in character. Author Reply: Hey Linda - Good to hear from you. I finally got back into writing fanfic with this story, partially because of the alphabet cue, but also because i wanted to write a story featuring the Steward's sons. I hope that 13th Birthday will ultimately show how the two 'mirs differentiate and are how they are similar. Well, we all know they look pretty similar, in both book and movieverse. - Steff
