A Blade for the Battle  by Linaewen 12 Review(s)

I do so love this whole tale and was appalled and astonished that I had not reviewed the final chapter... though it seems to carry a measure of hope that our Boromir might yet live....

I loved Aragorn's voice. You always right Boromir well, but in this tale, Aragorn is Aragorn. Well written indeed...

I do so hope that Boromir continued on - that Aragorn was able to save him - but whether yea or nay, Boromir once again was hope-filled!

A sad story, but a worthy one. Interesting expansion on the death of Boromir, with the addition of the ballad of the broken sword. At least he died comforted. And the comparison between his death and the breaking of a sword is an apt one.

Even Ecthelion could see in Boromir the fine warrior and defender of his people he would eventually become. Most boys at age six like to play war games but Boromir has more serious thoughts in his mind already.

It’s sad to see how close Denethor is to his sons knowing what will happen later.

I'm adding this story to my list of must reads.

I think what I liked best about the beginning of this is Boromir's attitude... most fanfic I've read of his time in Lorien is focused on the despair he feels... I love this sense of urgency, of desperate impatience...

And I loved that he turned to cleaning/preparing his gear - for I can see a soldier being heartened by the mundane task of caring for his armor.

I love Boromir's 'talking' to his sword, but rue the fact that Tolkien did not allow us to 'see' the glory of these two valiant Men fighting side by side. (Perhaps your 'other' tale might bring us such a glorious scene?)

For him to have the hope of Aragorn at his side, with Anduril, must have been heartbreaking.... Aragorn could not have realized the insidiousness of the plan of Sauron against Gondor and what it had doen to its Men... We see the final ploy that takes Denethor's life...

Oh my! The ending of the sword - that was so beautifully, tragically written.

Bravo! Well done, Linaewen!

I loved the line - and a little is enough - that had to have been Gondor's creed for the last many years - for they were assailed ten times over. Just a hideous time - reminds me of Arthur's last years - so much pain and heartache and death - and in the end, all lost... At least, that's what Faramir seems to think in Ithilien....

Very well written - makes me sigh for the Men of Gondor and their valor.

A proper, if terrible, way for his sword to have been found broken there on Parth Galen. And indeed he has felt his hope wane, thinking it fell to him to carry hope back to his land and people. But another will fulfill that hope in the end, and his spirit will rejoice.

Well written chapter.

Nice to see the inspiration for the movie moment with Frodo in the EE of FotR, the reminder not to try to carry the weight of the dead. His brother was indeed wise!

And he managed to maintain Harthad and hope. Always the defender!

Well written.

Author Reply: I'm glad you caught that reference to carrying the weight of the dead! I am trying not to have too many movie references in my writing, but that one is too special to ignore. I thought it a very apt description of what a "warrior guardian" might be like.

Thanks for your reading and your review!

The child Boromir already taking on his vocation--the warrior guardian.

I love the name for the sword! Yes, a worthy name for it! Thank you!

Author Reply: I like your name for Boromir -- the warrior guardian! Thanks for reading!

Boromir certainly had reason to challenge the Shadow. I always thought that Sauron's malice might have focussed, deliberately or randomly, on Finduilas and hastened her death.

A nice and logical touch having little Boromir receive his grandfather's sword.

Author Reply: I never thought of the idea that Sauron might have focussed on Finduilas, but it makes sense. What a way to put an enemy at a disadvantage early on!

Thanks for reading!

A desperate battle and a sword of hope; and it's Boromir, not Aragorn. I would assume that Harthad is the sword that Boromir bears on the Fellowship; but onl time will tell. A gripping chapter.

Interesting story!

Your observation that Boromir is the bearer of hope here rather than Aragorn is good. I always felt that as things got more and more difficult in Gondor, Boromir would find that he can't be the hope of his people without some help. Unfortunately, he looks in the wrong direction for that help!
