This ficlet puts a new spin on the phrase “torn in two” …as both Frodo and Bilbo are, in their own ways. A subtly drawn moment between the two of them, that rings very true emotionally. Nice work, Rowan! Author Reply: Thanks! What can I say? I love these two characters. :-)

I've always felt there must have been a conversation like this somewhere! It is obvious at the party that Frodo is prepared for Bilbo's departure and accepts it. Loved the mention of Eärendil and the connection these two hobbits will always have. Beautiful. Author Reply: Thank you! *blushes* You are too kind.

Good story. I agree that he had to have know and that there would have been some goodbye said previously. Love the idea of the star watching over Bilbo and that Frodo is okay with him leaving though it would have been a wrench to them both. Still Frodo knows that he is loved and that Bilbo is out there somewhere, still alive. And Bilbo knows he is loved and forgiven for wanting to leave and he knows too that Frodo will be well taken care of. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: That is what I was hoping to convey. Frodo is very perceptive -- his name doesn't mean "wise" for nothing! :-)

And this is absolutely, absolutely perfect for this talk for the both of them, particularly as I've seen so similar a talk. At least I won't have to write this over again for Second Mum! Heh! But don't be surprised to see a reference to it. Author Reply: All right, looking forward to that. I *hadn't* seen a similar talk, fortunately, or I might not have done it. (Which is silly -- in a fandom based on a single canon storyline, as opposed to an episodic TV series, there are bound to be hundreds of different interpretations of the same idea or scene.)

This is absolutely lovely, Rowan, from beginning to end! I too have felt that there had to have been some talk/form of goodbye between Frodo and Bilbo. You hit it straight on with Bilbo's thoughts: How can I leave him? he wonders. Especially now, on his coming of age? As if he were some -- obligation that I had to stay just long enough to see through, and as soon as it's done, off I go? How can he not feel as if he's being orphaned all over again? Bilbo, you fool! Frodo was never a burdensome obligation to Bilbo. I always felt sad for Frodo that he was abandoned on his coming of age and what should have been a happy time for him; and although Tolkien skips ahead 17 years in Frodo's life after, he is portrayed as loving and missing his dear uncle and never once resenting him for leaving him ... or not taking him with him. I also liked how you even had Frodo himself come to realize with no prompting from Bilbo just how much in love with the Shire he still was and that he knew it was not yet time for him to leave it yet. It shows his budding maturity as he comes of age, along with the confession that he once was indeed angry at his uncle and his later acceptance in knowing he would someday be left, but htat his uncle's happiness mattered more to him. I enjoyed this very much! Well done! ~Elemmírë~ Author Reply: I am so pleased it came out more or less as intended. I had been wanting for a long time to write a "farewell" between them. For some reason, Bilbo and Frodo are the one duo I keep coming back to, and this scene is one of those that just seemed to write itself.
