The End of Dark Days  by Edoraslass 12 Review(s)

A satisfying tale, but feels as if it could go on and on, of course. Very nice, Edoraslas. I've always loved Mags.

Lost brothers, I take it? Or nephews? Yes, this is war. But her husband and son are alive as is her favorite brother, so that's to the good.

But now to find what happened to her beloved former charge. This could be very distressing.

Lovely to see Mags and Nanny together again. And the details about the landscape as they see it is fantastic and makes it more realistic.

This is beautifully-written, and I must say, I'm glad to get some closure. It's also great to see Nanny again -- I've missed her, and I've been checking Under My Wing every once in a while, just in case an alert didn't make it to my inbox.

Nanny's protectiveness of her little rabbit is as touching as it ever was, and watching the two old friends converse was nice as well. I hope we'll see Nanny interacting with Faramir -- it would be interesting to see how they talk, now that Faramir is a fully-grown man (with a lover of his own!).

I like that Nanny doesn't believe Denethor could commit such a grievous act -- it says a lot about what he was like before. He, quite obviously, was not a monster, not an abusive parent, and not a lunatic. I'm glad.

Thank you for a wonderful story, and hoping for more,
Violin Ghost

Author Reply: Well, thank you! And nope, you haven't missed anything - my output's just been a little slow lately, sorry to day. I suppose my brain's recharging. :)

I do intend to give Nanny and Faramir some discussion - they'll certainly have a lot to talk about, won't they? - because I myself am curious to see how they'll talk with each other! I suspect Nanny will, to a point, treat him like he's still no taller than her knee.

And yep, Nanny has her Denethor issues, but she'd never believe him capable of actually physically hurting either one of his sons, especially not like THAT. But I have a feeling she wasn't as shocked as you might think to find that Denethor had lost his grip on reality.

Thank you so much!

Wonderful story, Edoraslass! I'm not familiar with Nanny, which made the story fun to read because I had to discover if she had been Mag's Nanny (Mag appeared "young" to me in Ch.1) or Nanny to Boromir and Faramir. She is well written and I love how she still worries and fusses over him, eventhough her services have long-since ended. :)

And silly me, I went to discover more of your writing before I even reviewed this, the 1st story I read! LOL By the way, I know what an OC is, but what is an OFC? F being female? that's all I can come up with! Keep up the great work!

Author Reply: Mag always appears young to me, no matter how old she actually is - have you read Ann's other Mag stories?

Thank you! I do enjoy writing Nanny, and she and Mag work so well together. And yep, the F is for "female".

Thank goodness for Mag. Her presence throughout it all lends perspective.

But she's right to wonder about how those who obeyed Denethor would cope with what they did - unless they could live with the 'just obeying orders' argument.

I can't help but feel for the kid with the good boots - a sacrifice to the greater good. In a way.

I'm sure Nanny will cast a most critical gaze over Eowyn. I only hope she lives up to expectations. (Doubtless she has a protective Nanny of her own to help her understand. It would be interesting to have the two surrogate mothers meet ...)

Author Reply: Yes, Mag is always so grounded and steady, she's just the one you want around when everything is falling apart.

I know, I feel so badly for that poor boy with his new boots, too! And he was so proud to be helping. He should have evacuated, poor dear.

I'm pretty sure Nanny will be fine with Eowyn....eventually.:)

Thanks, Bodkin!

I doubt many people with menfolk in the battle escaped with them totally unscathed, but still - poor Nanny and her family. It'll be a while before they all come to terms with what has happened.

And her husband is undoubtedly the best one to break to Nanny what has happened to her rabbit. Boromir and Faramir might not be her children, but they're as good as. You can't abandon a child you've raised from infancy, just because he was born to other parents ... The down-side of being a nanny.

Author Reply: She had so many brothers, it would have been more surprising if she hadn't lost anyone.

That's an excellent point, and one I hadn't thought of. I spent a great deal of time wondering who'd tell her, and her husband just seemed a natural choice, once I thought of him. And you're exactly right with your reasoning.

Thank you!

I do love Nanny. And Mag.

And any hint of danger to her little rabbit will sharpen her like a blade.

Author Reply: Oh yes, for all that he's 36 years old, she's ready to defend. :)
Thanks!

Oh these three chapters are great Edoraslass - can't wait for that meeting!

Author Reply: Thank you, and I'll pass on Ann's thanks as well! I'm not sure when the meeting will be, but I'm sure I'll get there one day!

But- but- Wait! How can this be "Complete"??? I want to see Nanny and Mag figure out the King is Thorongil-who-Nanny-didn't-like. I want to see Nanny visit Faramir, and ambush Eowyn, and meet Pippin and Merry, and bump into Prince Imrahil!

Truly, this was a wonderful glimpse of two dear friends reuniting. The impact of the war on Nanny's family was so sad, but realistic; and Mag's thoughts and descriptions of the horrible events she witnessed were very chilling.

Are Nanny's husband and son both professional soldiers? How do they manage after the war? I can't imagine Nanny staying away from Dol Amroth any longer than she has to, but it will probably be a while before her husband and son heal enough to travel. Please, do give us more!
