Love it......Faramir is certainly an improvement on his own father, lol....Very beautifully written. I could see it all, and could well have seen myself doing the same thing, even now, perhaps.......... ~~~{~@ Author Reply: Many thanks! I think all childrenneed to live dangerously to some extent. You can't grow up unless you come out of the egg, so to speak. Parents have to tread that thin line between curbing the most dangerous instincts and encouraging enterprise and spirit. I tried to show Faramir doing that. I've a feeling that in his own childhood, Denethor's cold and authoritative attitude might have crushed him altogether if he hadn't had Boromir on his side.

I loved this! great job! I know my first reaction (after hugging my child for all its worth--that is, if I had one) would be to loudly and forcely forbid that child from ever doing it again! But as hard as it would be for me to do the same, Faramir showed his wisdom in how he handled it, not expressly forbidding Elboron to do it again (as that would probably definitely ensure the child would), remembering from his own childhood the foolish things that children do and knowing that he wouldn't be there all the time to stop them all. Though I did like his comment that climbing out on the ledge was very foolish and his sternly reminding his son that he didn't like fools (knowing that his son looked up to him and wanted to please him and unabashedly using this trait to try to stop his son from doing it again :D ) Faramir is a very honorable man, but even he isn't above manipulation to get what he wants...... Did they decide to keep this under their hats, or was Eowyn ever told about the incident? (I really can't see her being as, um, understanding as Faramir.....:D ) It was great to see a new story from you! Well done, and thanks so much for sharing! Author Reply: I've a feeling that Faramir and Elboron kept this under their hats. There are times when you have to be all-men-together. On the other hand, when Elboron was smaller there might have been the occasional pact with Eowyn: I won't tell your father about this so long as you promise not to do it again... It's part of how good families work, I think. Faramir is a bit of a manipulator. Look at how he handles Frodo and Sam, with immense psychological skill, so as to eventually get the information he wants without ever using violence, or telling the smallest hint of a lie. Which isn't to say that he doesn't 'manipulate' the truth, e.g. by concealing the fact that he knows Boromir is dead in order to probe Frodo's attitude towards Boromir. It's interesting that he denies Frodo's accusation that he's trying to ensnare him with a falsehood, but doesn't deny the accusation that he's been 'trying to trap [Frodo] with words, playing with him'. Because he has! Then in RoTK we see where he got the skill from, when we see Denethor manipulating HIM into going to Osgiliath quite against his, Faramir's, better judgement. Faramir puts up a very good fight against this manupulation, but he cracks in the end.

How Does One Truly And Really Identify With A Favorite Character. Whom you managed to show as an admirable manipulator. It made me sick. And it makes me wonder what Denethor did and thought when (if) he found out. I'm glad that discussion prompted this wonderful ficlet. Author Reply: Well, you have to 'manipulate' children for their own good. Perhaps it would be kinder to say 'influence', but I think it's usually wiser to go along with their way of thinking rather than just laying down the law and leaving them looking for ways to circumvent it. I don't think Denethor ever found out about this particular exploit. If he had he'd certainly have been angry at his precious elder son risking his life. But I don't think he took the sort of interest in his sons' everyday life that Faramir would.

A wonderful look at young Elboron, and Faramir as a father. Faramir must have nearly had a heart attack, seeing his son stuck out on that narrow ledge and having to go out and get him, but you know he would do it. I think he handled Elboron exactly right. Author Reply: As somebody once said, you need nerves of steel to be a parent!

You had me feeling quite giddy reading this !Thank Goodness Faramir came in time!I'm glad Elboron will not do it again.A gripping tale. Author Reply: I'm always torn between wanting to climb heights - not tricky ones, just the odd rock - and the fear of falling. Of course, it's the fear that makes the thrill. I think if Faramir had just told Elboron not to do it again, the desire to do it would have become far stronger. But nobody wants to be thought a fool by someone they admire.

I loved this little story--there are too few Elboron fics out there. I hope he learns his lesson. -Calenlass Author Reply: It's funny, since Elboron is no more than a name officially, but I've always had a very vivid idea of him. With Faramir and Eowyn for parents he just has to be interesting!
