Too bad he didn't wear the stuff more often. I'm sure all Orcs would have fled in terror. *g*

Author Reply: EEK - Beware the Orange Rangers! No, no, not the dreaded orange leggings! I don't know what the calendar artists, or Faramir's Aunt Ivriniel, were thinking.

Thanx for reading and reviewing, Soledad!

I've seen the picture before and thought it ridiculous: not only are the poor Hobbits horribly painted, but Robin-Hood!Faramir is so outlandish as well!

But your story was a very amusing (and surprisingly realistic!) explanation to that... :) I also loved the glimpse in Faramir's life as a Captain of Rangers! :)

Author Reply: I tried to figure out why on even an alternate Middle-earth Faramir would be wearing bright orange as an Ithilien ranger, and came up with his well-meaning aunt sending him and the Rangers lots of gifts, including horrible clothing. And you're right, the hobbits look odd in the picture, particularly poor Sam, who was not supposed to have a fat head or fat body. I figure the Rangers would be starved for goodies and luxuries like special sauces and whatnot...

I'm glad the story pleased you!

That was simply hilarious!

Author Reply: I had a lot of fun with this story, Nesta; I'm pleased you enjoyed the finished product. Thanx for reviewing!

Oh brilliant Raksha - particularly as I am in exactly the same position! A dear, kind lady from church has gifted me with a white velour jogging suit, a white shirt and a, hideous, brown cardigan. As I am a large lady she has found out my correct size and will expect to see me wearing them!

Author Reply: Beware of kind ladies bearing gifts - you might have to actually wear them! You and Faramir now have something in common; strained smiles and kind ladies who mean well. Sounds like your gift-giver is a dear person; though.

Glad you liked the story.

This was just delightful. You should write comedy more often.I loved the idea of Faramir's aunt sending the M-e equivalent of a reindeer pullover! Faramir is so sweet to suffer the gifts for the sake of his men.

I would love to write comedy more often; but the Comedy Muse is even more fickle than her sisters. This is AU!Faramir; and he isn't as practical as his true LOTR counterpart, who would have insisted on not going out to ambush the Haradrim wearing orange with his Ranger greens.

The prompt for this fic is a calendar illustration of Faramir in a hideous orange and green outfit. Back in the 70s, I loved those Hildebrandt calendars, but in retrospect, many of the costumes look just plain bad. This fic gives a clever explanation of why Faramir would ever don orange leggings.

Author Reply: I couldn't think of any other reason why Faramir would be caught dead in orange leggings. Unless he lost an ill-advised bet with Mablung and had to pay up by wearing orange and perhaps doing a vaudeville routine while slaughtering Haradrim...The Hildebrandts had their strengths and weaknesses in drawing/painting; but costuming wasn't always their strong point. (though I liked the wedding dress in which they attired Arwen for the midsummer marriage)

Some of the pictures in the calendar that year were SO gross! You did a wonderful job of justifying it! Ivriniel the colorblind! Heh! NOW we know how that picture got done!
