Oh, yes, those *lovely* nightmares that leave us certain we’re late for something, have done something wrong, or have totally embarrassed ourselves…poor Denethor.

Ah, poor guy. It looks as if he was ever troubled in mind and spirit--which is usually the case with overly ambitious Men. I felt quite sorry for him here.

Author Reply: I'm glad you felt sorry for him - for something drove the man - I know not if it was ambition... or despair, even early on in life.

Poor Denethor! And he will probably continue having that dream for the rest of his life (I know that I still have test anxiety dreams ten years after I finished grad school.) But this is an indication of how difficult (impossible?) it is to please his father.
Well done!

Author Reply: Isn't that the truth, Branwyn! I hate when I have a report due or a meeting that I am not sure of, or the baby is sick, or whatever. Life seems to deprive us of sleep when most we need it!

Poor Denethor. Even his most trivial dreams are bad ones! I can sympathise because I always have a similar dream the night before an important meeting.

I just thought of what must have been the worst job in the 'free' part of Middle Earth: Denethor's jester!

Author Reply: A jester would have been welcome, I think. But I cannot see how any could look across the Pelennor and laugh...

I've had those sorts of dreams and for a few seconds they seem so very real.

Author Reply: I hate those kind. I try to lie back in bed and remake the dream so that it comes out with a better ending. Poor Denethor!

Thanks for reading and most especially for responding!

Oh, how well anxiety can play such tricks on us! Nicely realistic, even the cold, cold stone floor.

Author Reply: I could just feel my toes cramping as I wrote it. LOL

Thanks, Larner, for your kind comments and for reading these!

This is a great drabble. You do a wonderful job of linking past and present by showing how Denethor's present personality is still affected by past worry and pain. I really like it.

Author Reply: With the war, no king, and a father as the last bastion of hope for the free world and no family, except said father, that we ever hear of - all I can presume is that Denethor had it rough as a kid. Glad the scene worked for you.

And thank you so much for your comments!

Chilling. I am sure that Denethor had more and more of those sorts of disorienting dreams and experiences the more he relied on the palantir.

Author Reply: The lad was definitly under a lot of strain, being the Steward's son and expected to be 'perfect' - so it didn't surprise me to see that stress turned into nightmares. And yes, the Palantir would probably cause a LOT more!

Thanks ever so much for reading and especially for your comment!
