The Green Knight and the Master of Esgaroth  by Le Rouret 7 Review(s)
DreamflowerReviewed Chapter: 8 on 4/1/2008
Oh dear! Oh dear! I was just rolling by the time I finished reading the account of valiant Tamin's defense of his friends' honor! LOL! Theodred was an absolute hoot!

*ahem*deep breath*

I don't wish to neglect the earlier parts of this which were so delightful--loved the naughty ballad, the bits about the doublet, and Legolas realizing that Eowyn is once more in an interesting condition. Looks like he'll need to brush up on his midwifery again. And I loved how sharp Bandobras has proved to be--of course he figured there was more going on than he'd been told.

But--oh dear! Poor little Tamin! So earnestly going to Fastred's defense and then finding his efforts completely unappreciated! And for all of Hisime's high-flown language, it certainly looks as though she is beginning to notice certain things herself--just as well that Theodred is still being the bratty little brother, or poor Tamin might have found himself in another situation he could not understand.

Ah, Fastred! I loved Faramir's recognition of those traits that were so like Boromir's--a bit of stiff-necked pride only made all the worse by adolescent turmoil. And Leodwyn's attempts to make Fastred jealous have backfired, and she's being a twit about it. It's all so "high school", though it sounds *MUCH* better in such articulate and high-flown language than it does in modern "teen-speak"!

It seems to me that Fastred--and even Hisime--have almost outstripped poor Tamin in their development. But perhaps it's as well that Theodred now seems to be about the same age developmentally if not chronologically.

Theodred's a stinker, and I love him to peices. He sort of reminds me of Bandobras' Uncle Pippin.

Poor Tamin!

Author Reply: Yes, poor Tamin! Haven't we all been there, in one form or another? Anyone who reminisces fondly about high school needs their head examined.

Do you plan to have Legolas never sleep again? The poor Elf can only take so much... I'm waiting for him to collapse in the middle of dinner. This little drama was wonderful to watch play out. I was expecting another night terror for Legolas when you sent him off to bed, but I was way off the mark :P I can see Fastred coming around soon, if he followed his wise mother's advice and apologized. Although his pratishness is so very amusing it would be nice to see how he and Leodwyn develop. It's lucky that Faramir and Eowyn had more than one child; if Tamin had been stranded in Osgiliath with no one to play with (excluding his Master, who would probably oblige happily) he would feel even more alone.

Author Reply: "Prattishness;" yes, that describes Fastred's current state well, doesn't it? I don't know what it is about adolescent boys; they can be so cruel to each other!

Wow. Kaimelas is right...Fastred is behaving like a little wort! He's gone from a Prince Caspian-esque character to being rather more like Eustace Scrubb. Poor little Tamin! The entire family at Tamin's little trial was hilarious! From Mom and Dad containing their laughter behind serious faces to the helpful little brother to the little lady of a sister to the self-righteous wort of a firstborn--I feel like I've met these people before!

As everyone seems to be putting in pleas for Legolas's safety, let me add a word for my favorite Elf, that old battle-ax of a King, none other than his majesty Thranduil Oropherion. May he come out of this story with his person intact (or as well and whole as you can conveniently make him)! Thanks for the update; looking forward to more!

Author Reply: An interesting comparison between Caspian and Eustace ... but remember that even Caspian had his moments, and Eustace was ultimately redeemed.

Don't worry; I may take Thranduil out to play, but I always put him back in the box intact.

I'll gladly take tips! *grin* Or just rememeber you will owe me big time if you hurt my elf. *taps foot* I still want that romance for him, ya know.

And this was my favorite chapter to date. I want to adopt Theodred. *snorts* He was so perfectly written. Reminded me SO much of my nephews who I helped raise during my teen years. They were more like little brothers than nephews and I could just hear them spouting these kinds of lines too! He just kept me in stitches. The comic relief helped relieve some of the tension as well. Poor Tamin. I feel so badly for him. And I want to join Kaimelas in whipping a couple of foolish teens (Fastred and Leodwyn). So very typically adolescent. They have so much to learn. I think Tamin will be much better at this romance stuff when it comes to be his turn. He's already learned how to woo the ladies and be concerned for their feelings. Me thinks Hisime may have a bit of a crush? Not serious, but cute nonetheless.

So...will Legolas ever sleep? Will you torture your poor readers by torturing Legolas and Thranduil as well? Will Fastred ever get the girl? Will Halgond's nose ever be the same again? I'm staying tuned for another episode! *silly grin* I look forward to more!

Author Reply: Poor Halgond! I did sort of leave him and his nose hanging, didn't I? Well, I was never crazy about him anyway ...

Oh what a absolutely wonderful chapter Le Rouret.
First, I think I am absolutely jealous of Seimiel, Kaimelas is turning out to be my favorite elf. Poor Tamin (actually poor me, my firstborn is having his first romance at 16 and has turned into a absolue horror-I'm two steps from murder) hopefully Gimil and Barnabas will be able to help him understand us mortals.

If you ever have to pay your beta, I'll chip in, your stories are wonderful are worth a lot of mithril

Author Reply: You can pay my beta by thanking her! And by reading her fics; she's an excellent writer herself. And she's careful with commas. I appreciate that.

Romances and adolescents rarely congress without incident. My condolences. Fortunately for me, my fourteen-year-old will not countenance romance with a boy who isn't "horsy," and her true love is a black and white piebald paint!

Little Tamin is so sweet and innocent. He doesn't deserve a snot like Fastred for a friend. I loved Hisilmė trying to act like Isolde with Tristan only to have little brother butt in as only little brothers can. *grin* And I'm not surprised no one got the celebrity quote: I've never even heard of Davey Havok and wouldn't know him from a hole in the wall. But then, I live in China, so maybe it's just me. *grin* Can't wait to see what happens next!

Author Reply: The only reason I know who Davey Havok is is because of my fourteen-year-old daughter, who thinks he's "hot." But she also thinks Alan Rickman is "hot," so I'm not overly concerned.

No one seems to feel sorry for Hisime! Poor girl.
