The Green Knight and the Master of Esgaroth  by Le Rouret 8 Review(s)

All the signs were pointing at Kaimelas' death, so I suppose I had already prepared myself for it. And yet, it was still heartwrenching. Wow.

I do believe this is the first time that I have reviewed any of your work, though I have (by now) read everything of your that I can find.

I am not going to comment on the Pottymouth universe. (Though there are things that I liked about it, there were others that I did not; in any event, I am trying to wean myself off the NC-17 stuff.)

The Green Knight universe, I have to say, amazes me. I confess that at first I thought it was an utterly ridiculous idea. Tournaments and jousts in Middle-Earth? But after a while the idea grew on me. Tolkien after all referred to Imrahil's "knights", and there was always a sense (for me, at least), that Middle Earth was in our distant past. And given that (in our more *recent* past) the European knights (at least) did have tournaments and jousting (or so the literature suggests)... one could make a plausible argument in favor of jousting tournaments in Gondor.

What first sold me on it, I think, was the absolutely wonderful descriptions of the horses. I am a city girl myself, and know nothing about horses, but you brought them to life and gave them their own distinct characters astonishingly well. Hatchet was a favorite of mine, his mad bellowing charges a delight to read, and I was sad at his demise (and latter, Pikukka's).

The twists and turns and intrigues and escalating danger of the GK tournament also ensnared me. Who's the villian? What next? And when Legolas went to his esquire's rescue and was (at least to those of his fellow knights who went to his aid) unmasked - that was an awesome scene.

The friendship between Legolas and his mortal neighbors is a wonderful part of the GK universe (and it is a nice change that among the canonical characters it is (also very logically) focused on Faramir and Eowyn, instead of Aragorn and Arwen).

The supporting OCs are all well characterized and (excepting the villians) sympathetic. Tamin is charming, Fastred sulky (I have a teen and I know what that is like), Legolas' fellow knights (I loved the story of Mardil's courtship) and the Dol Galenehtar Elves all a pleasure to read about.

This particular story, while perhaps the darkest of those you have written so far, has also got its grip on me. I fear what has happened to Thranduil (that he mercifully does not recall) and the townspeople of Esgaroth (and now, perhaps, Dale). I *love* the Erebor Dwarves! Malbeach and Renna are horrid, and need to be dealt with promptly (I like the Dwarvish solution). I fear for Durfinwen (I suspect Legolas is sweeter on her than he knows) and Kaimelas (NO! NOT KASSAH!).

In short, I look forward to the continuation of this excellent action/adventure/drama story, and hopefully for more GK stories to follow.

Author Reply: Wow! I was very overwhelmed at first with this review; then I saw that you were in essence reviewing all of my fics at once.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to not only read my scribblings, but to tell me what you think of them. I'm very flattered, and appreciate your comments. I too love my OCs, my horses, and the Green Knight universe.

Secondly, "Pottymouth" was a (very old) experiment; I've played around with sequels, but I've kind of grown cold on it. It was fun, full stop; I think there's more potential for both humor and pathos is direct narrative. And yes, there are parts that I dislike about it, too, upon reflection.

Thirdly ... yes, I shall continue! Chapter 21 is in the works and I hope to finish it this week.

Thank you, again, for your comprehensive review!

Oh! Oh dear! *holding breath*

Author Reply: I'll say the same thing Nír said to poor Kaimelas ... Breathe, breathe!

Chapter 21 is in the works. I hope to have it finished this week!

NOOOOOOOOO!!! Not Kaimelas!!!No!NO!NO!! "Sniff!" An excellent chapter, even though I want just 5 minutes with your Muse!

Author Reply: You want five minutes with my muse? Why, to punish her, or to share her margaritas?

Thanks for reviewing! I'm working on Ch. 21 right now.

I wanted to kill your muse for this chapter. I saw it coming and yet... *wails* I have a feeling this whole story shall be full of heart ache before it's over. But wow, the writing is SPECTACULAR! This was so vivid, I could see it happening! *sniffs* Okay, going to grieve now.

Author Reply: My muse is unapologetic, both for the margaritas in Cabo, and for what she's done to poor Kaimelas. I'm going to try to have CH. 21 finished today or tomorrow ... I'll send it to you & hope you're not too busy!

!

Kaimelas?

That was a fantastic chapter.

Author Reply: Yep, Kaimelas!

Thanks!

I'm glad that you have updated. Hope that everything is OK in your live and I'm happy that your muse returned.
AS always, love the chapter, glad that Thranduil is better around the dwarves. I have many things to say, but too little time (I'm working) just if you kill Kaimelas I'll hunt your muse and find her whereever she hide, not matter how far...Thanks, someday I'll write a propper review...

Author Reply: LOL, thanks, Fantasia! I'm not too happy with my muse right now, either.

Oh, thank you for this chapter! I knew you wouldn't leave us with this tale unfinished, and it's been worthe the wait. It's a very satisfying installment; someone has finally been able to take a swing at the Master of Esgaroth, but you've left us in a most uncomfortable spot. Anxiety shall reign high until the next chapter. Thanks for sharing this with us, and we'll be here when you return with more of this fine story.

Author Reply: Thank you, Pennywhistle! I'm working on Ch. 21 as we speak. I'm hoping to have it back from the beta by next week.
