The Green Knight and the Master of Esgaroth  by Le Rouret 6 Review(s)

Woohoo! A brilliant chapter! Thank you for this update!

Gimli truly shines in this one and you have to love him for goading Muhk into showing himself. Something tells me the little they have learned is going to come in handy. For one thing, they might have learned that this cold drake hates being compared to the fire drakes and appears to be somewhat jealous of their skills. Another is that he seems to have difficulty keeping his dinner down, and I wonder if this is a trait of all dragons or just this one. Yet this monster has a power over elves and men I have never heard of before (not that I've really studied dragons that is) -- he can woo them. Yet he does not have that effect on dwarves. Hmm, I wonder why that is? I'm sure we will eventually learn.

In the meantime, the little foreshadowing in Legolas' dream seems to have some significance now. We have the bird, the hornet and the worm. The bird spoke in the dream, so I think it has something to say yet in this reality. And it ate the worm while the hornet stung. What does that mean? Further, the bird here is a nightingale, a singing bird, which makes me think it is tied to the singing nature of elves (and nature and the forests, of course) Now I'll have to go back and re-read the chapter with the dream to puzzle it out a little more. There is something important here I think.

I have more re-reading to do beyond that though. Now that we've learned the dragon is named Muhk, all those scary utterances of "crawl, harlot, muck, muck" start to make some sense. I have to see if there is more to them than just those little snippets of phrasing. Perhaps there is a clue to be found? I'll let you know if I can figure this out.

Love this story! Looking forward to the next installment! Keep em coming.

A cold-drake, eh? Fascinating...

This was a horrid chapter (not a criticism - just to say that the whole tale of what went down (with the Dwarves, Belegtilion, Belias, etc.) is horrid). So Renna started all of the trouble? Sacrificed her children? I guess I understand now why Malbeach treats her as he does.

So Mukh came down to get warm, and to feed. I guess that explains where almost all of the women went to. *shudder* It is a bit surprising about the young men - but I guess they ran out of women and had to throw *somebody* to Mukh to appease him. But he truly must have them all ensorcelled, if each of them (the Men in Malbeach's army) can't see that sooner or later (after the women, children, horses, farmers, etc. run out) it will be *their* turn as a tasty meat snack.

One can only sympathize with Vé and his survivor's guilt. What a horrid tale - and yet I suspect that there is something unsaid (perhaps something that he didn't quite hear or get in his eavesdropping). It seems from his story that Malbeach and company were truly interested in gaining *Dúrfinwen's* cooperation (not Melima's, not the men's) - and I can't believe that it was simply a matter of making her cooperate with her own rape. Something more, I can't help but feel, is involved here. (Of course I could be wrong... but part of the fun of fanfiction is speculation on character motives, and what might come next.)

I guess Legolas took the nightengale's presence as a token that he was supposed to be there, and that (tied with his dreams of doom, not to mention wanting payback/justice for all of the horrors, and to rescue what is left of the Men of Rhovanion) has set his resolve to slay the dragon.

The thing is, in the face of the horrid compulsion that Mukh has over Elves and Men (but WHY not Dwarves?), I don't see how he, personally, is going to accomplish it. Yes, Gimli's hacking off of a scale might give him a physical opening, but that only helps if he has free will and full control of himself, to take advantage of the opportunity. In the face of the cold-drake's compulsion, how is he going to manage that? (Maybe there is some shiny shield he can use as a mirror in Vé's stash, sort of like Perseus and the Medusa? But that would only (maybe) work if the compulsion was totally tied to sight. The impression that I have (perhaps wrongly) is that Mukh's voice, itself, is also compelling...)

Although the events have been horrifying, this is a fascinating story and I can't wait to see how Mukh is dispatched. I think that the aftermath of that event is going to be horrible, too, however - as the Men wake up and realize what has happened, and what they have done. I predict that Legolas (and/or the Elves and Dwarves) are not going to have either the burden or the opportunity of bringing Malbeach and Renna to justice...

You've created such a dark, malevolent monster in Muhk, and what a distressing tale from Vé. But at least Legolas seems more like himself. I'm just hoping that now that Gimli has cut off one of the dragon's scales, that will give a weak spot for Legolas to shoot at.

Oh my GAWD! That was a fantastic chapter. I am so into this story, it's ridiculous. I normally try not to bug authors, but please, please update as soon as you can. I know you're busy, but O MY GAWD this chapter was amazing.
I adore Ve, he is a fantastic character; instantly likeable but he still feels genuine.
Muhk is just horrific. Absolutely perfect.
I love this story so much.
Thank you for updating, and I promise to wait patiently for the next chapter.

Oh what horrible fates for Legolas' friends!

I like Ve! And it's a good thing that he can explain what's been going on to Legolas and the others--somehow he's given an idea to Legolas, I'm not sure how. Oh, and Malbeach and Renna are abominations even worse than I thought they were! Her own children! *shudder*

I do hope that whatever his plan is works...

THIS is an OUTSTANDING chapter! I absolutely LOVE Gimli here. The action is great! And Ve is wonderful. At last, we have some answers! Though hearing the news of Legolas's people has been heartrending. Now I'm settling in for some serious kick butt right after I'm sure you wrench our hearts some more. :p
