Seeking the Sun  by Linda Hoyland 8 Review(s)
Raksha The DemonReviewed Chapter: 1 on 5/20/2008
One of Linda's best short pieces, showing that non-combatants can also be scarred by the horrors of war. Fortunately, the heroine finds that a King and Queen out of legend can be real and compassionate people. And the last line is just gorgeous!

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review. There is a war memorial I've seen which commemerates the suffering of women and children as well as soldiers. I'm pleased you enjoyed the story.

This is riveting. I could really see an OC like this--I'm sure there were many who at first resented the new king, whom they might have felt brought all their troubles upon them, rather than thinking of him as a savior.

But any encounter with him in person, I think, would reveal the truth of it to them. Very well done.

This is an OC I'd like to see again. I wonder what she names her child.

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I'm delighted you enjoyed my story and liked the OFC.My OCs have a trick of taking on a life of their own and demanding to return in future stories as I see all my stories as a whole,so who knows if Niniel might return one day?
I think she calls the baby something to honour the King and Queen and I feel it will be a girl.

The books say of Aragorn "All who know him come to love him",but they would have to know him first!

Hello,

What a beautiful story! This embittered woman, who has lost all her family, has found hope. I am glad you were inspired to tell her tale.

Where can I find the story which sparked this one? I would like to read it as well.

Many Blessings,

Alassiel

I liked this, Linda. The emotion is very raw and believable, and I like the Tolkien themes of mercy and pity as they play out in this woman's life. Aragorn and Arwen appear as the noble characters Tolkien created.

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I'm delighted you liked my story and feel it is true to Tolkien.I love Aragorn and Arwen in the book.

This was a lovely example of the triumph of love over grief, Linda. Niniel's bitterness was so sharp, and yet it was easy to understand why she felt abandoned and resentful. There are so many people in the world with the kind of charisma that causes other people to flock to them, but in Elessar's case it was genuine and generous and true. What a beautiful line at the end. I do imagine that is how people reacted to him.

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I fear war leaves many like poor Ninniel. If only there were more around like Aragorn, willing to try to heal the pain of his people.I'm delighted you enjoyed the story.

I liked this a lot, Linda. It's a different perspective on post-war Minas Tirith, one you made me believe in. It's realistic to think that the war tore up people's lives and some of them might blame the king. Nice job.

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I'm pleased you enjoyed the story and you found it believable. All war causes pain, even when the cause is just and the battle has been won.

Linda, this was a very moving story before the revision, and I think it's more moving now.

And I agree with Niniel: one cannot help but love Aragorn
