Fording The Greyflood  by Jay of Lasgalen 8 Review(s)

A good interaction of the event of Boromir crossing the Greyflood. And yes, I always thought he had only 'lost' his horse, not that the horse had died in crossing. Great interaction with the Sons of Elrond and Halbarad! Thanks for sharing!

I had marked this one for reading when I had time, for it is a non common gapfiller, about Boromir's wanderings in search of Imladris... I had to laugh at his practical approach at the twins, caling them both Elladan! :-) And sure the four travellers must have been impressed by his stubborness when he decided to continue on foot, following their less than clear indications! That trip was surely a great deed!

Loved this tale - very nice gapfiller. I loved the description of the bridge and then the assault of the tree (think it was an Ent?) and the 'drowning' - very nicely written. I loved seeing the Twins... but what would one expect from Jay of Lasgalen - it would have been a shallow tale indeed, without the two.

As for the horse - you are correct in stating that the horse was lost - however, it did not die. Makes no difference to the tale - for it was quite good. But here is the quote.

Blessings!

"Tell me, lord," he said, "what brings you here? And what was the meaning of the dark words? Long has Boromir son of Denethor been gone seeking an answer, and the horse that we lent him came back riderless. What doom do you bring out of the North?" TTT: Book 3: Ch. 2: The Riders of Rohan...

Author Reply: Oooh - well spotted! I never knew the horse had come back.

Although this is Boromir's tale, of course the twins had to make an appearance - who else is going to perform a heroic rescue?

The flood scenes are all too real at the moment! A flood is terrifying, I have to say.

I laughed at the idea of calling both twins Elladan and thus having a 50/50 chance of being right.

Author Reply: I was in knee-deep flood water once, and could barely stand. A raging river must be terrifying.

I think the twins are probably used to answering to each other's names - but Elrohir especially is fed up with it!

A fascinating look at the crossing of Greyflood. Love that the twins were amongst those who helped rescue him and aid him, but that even they wouldn't give him explicit directions from there.

I'd thought, too, that the horse had died in the flood, but it could possibly have simply been swept away; I think one story indicated the horse returned to Minas Tirith, but not the rider, not even by way of the long route; the closest he came to home again would be when his funeral boat followed the current of the river from Osgiliath past the Harlond and southwestward from there.

A doughty and stubborn man indeed was Boromir, and worthy of much honor.

Love this story, Jay!

Author Reply: As soon as I looked at this scene again, it was obvious to me who had rescued Boromir :>) But the twins have long guarded and protected their home - so they wouldn't give out directions to strangers they meet on the road.

I thought about the horse just being swept away too, but it seems very unlikely it would have survived the flood. If it had, it *could* have returned home - after all, Bill the Pony did!

Don't like killing off horses, even if it is canon :-( *sniff* Poor Ladron.

Ah, so the twins saved Boromir's life? Now I want to know what happens when they meet again in Imladris and he finds out that they are Elrond's sons, but still didn't tell him where exactly Imladris was!

Anyway, was amused about Boromir's decision to call them both Elladan. Elrohir will feel left out *grin*

Author Reply: Yes, poor Ladron - but I didn't have any choice :(

'Elrohir will feel left out That's probably why he was less than clear in his directions ...

I'm glad Boromirs inate distrust of elves did not prevent him from accepting the twins aid and being gracious at the end. Enjoyed your story (as usual, I'd be shocked if I didn't like one of your stories). Tell Elladan & Elrohir I'm glad they behaved themselves.

Author Reply: 'Tell Elladan & Elrohir I'm glad they behaved themselves.'

Only just - I had a devil of a time making them realise that this was Boromir's story, and they couldn't have a bigger role!

Hm, seems to me most people don't want to trust Boromir, but then if he had been a little more trusting himself maybe they would have been. Yet another fic where he gets help but only vague directions/misdirections to Rivendell.
Oh well he will get there in the end!
Lynda

Author Reply: Boromir says at the Council that he'd wandered while searching for Rivendell, and no-one seemed to know where it was - so the twins couldn't be too specific! At least they pointed him in the right direction.
