History Lessons  by Nilmandra 6 Review(s)

This is without doubt the best summary of the Silmarillion I've run into so far. One thing that I really appreciated about Glorfindel was how he told the story truthfully. There's so much of that story that is heartbreakingly sad, and I think the instinct would be to shield children from that. But that would be changing history. Anyway, it's a bit of an odd take on this chapter, but I really enjoyed it. But Glorfindel is one of my favorite characters, so perhaps I'm just biased as to his wonderfulness. Actually, I think I understand the history so much better already and it's only chapter two!

Dang you! Here I had to read another chapter that's just as lovely and readable as the first! I love the energy of the twins- they're absolutely adorable- and in a different way I'm in love with your Elrond. I just... am. He's so cool and there's so much to him. The trouble is, I'm sick and I should have been in bed half an hour ago, but I found your story instead. I'll pick it up another day, but right now I just thought I'd share some of the "aaaah! Good!" that's running through my head on reading this (and also the "Oh! That's what happened!" since there were parts of The Silmarillion I didn't get).

Ahhhhhhh! Thank you! Not only a great story, but informative as well. I've been writing a story in which Legolas is telling of the beginnings of Arda, and have been worrying that I had misinterpreted The Silmarillion. It seems I haven't! YAY!!! Great chapter - Glorfindel is a great teacher AND storyteller. I love the twins almost ending up in his lap as the story unfolds! :)

"He was jealous. Even though Morgoth, then called Melkor, was one of the most powerful of the Valar, he was jealous of the other Valar and that which they created. He turned to destroying the good things they made instead of adding his own good things to Arda."

Elladan looked at Elrohir and felt his face flush. He leaned across Glorfindel's knees and beckoned his twin to draw near. "I am sorry I scribbled on your drawing," he whispered.

Elrohir patted his hand. "And I am sorry I ruined your carving," he whispered back.

I really loved this exchange. LOL!!! Sorry, just had to share that!

What a brilliant summary of the Beginnings! I particularly love the passage with Elladan and Elrohir's ancestry, that was beautifully put together!

I hate to sya this, but I have the tiniest niggle. In the Sil, chapter Nine, it refer's to the name Morgoth:

"[Fëanor] cursed Melkor, naming him Morgoth... and by that name only was he known to the Eldar ever after"

While of course Glorfindel would know the name, it strikes me that the twins might know him more readily as Morgoth? It's just a thought, and I hesitate to say it, because I hate to critisise a story so well written.
