Aspects of Aragorn  by Inzilbeth 12 Review(s)

Poor Aragorn! I don't think that was the kind of adventure he expected to find when he set out with Gandalf for Rohan. *g* I'm glad he was able to help that mare and so get into Thengel's good graces. Caring for one of the Mearas is quite a promotion from what he did at first. ;-) I've always wondered how he came to hold the position he finally did in Rohan, and how difficult it must have been for him at first to gain respect and recognition. I love that Aragorn was humble enough to accept the employment he was offered at first - his humility really makes him a quite unusual and lovable king. :)

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Almut. This chapter was a challenge as we have nothing much to go on in canon at this stage in Aragorn's life. It must though have his first experience of hiding his true identity and I felt that surely would have been very challenging at first, especially in a foreign country where he couldn't speak the language.

Yes, this was certainly a lesson in humility. We wouldn't have him any other way though, would we!

Pigs and cattle for the future king of Gondor? Lol, you are certainly teaching him humility…
I just wonder what was the reaction of the Dúnedain to his departure. They seemed to be quite fond on his leadership.

Author Reply: Yes, if the future king is going to live in disguise, he'll have to get used to this!

That's a very good point about the Dunedain and one touched on in a later chapter. Another episode worthy of it's own story perhaps!

Thank you so much for your review.

Poor Aragorn. It truly would have been a new low for him in Rohan, at first. Even going from Rivendell to the Dunedain, he would have had a position of status and privilege. Not that he would have taken advantage of it, but it was his choice! In Rohan it would have been quite different. I'm glad he found a way to prove his worth early and get on Thengel's good side!

Author Reply: Yes, I tend to feel this was the biggest shock of all for him as he found himself surrounded by people who had no idea who he actually was. It must have been a good lesson in humility for him, but, being the star he was, I doubt it took him long to work his way up!

Heheh! Aragorn needs to learn humility- a wise lesson from Gandalf. I have seen various interpretations of Thorongil's first days in Rohan, but I do believe that this is the first I've seen where he was mucking the stables on day one! To care for one of the mearas is indeed a promotion. It would have been rather, eh, unfortunate if the herbs didn't work.

I hope that Thengel will soon see his skill not only with herbs, but with the sword as well. He may also be delighted in the fact that he speaks Sindarin... Morwen likely would. I do hope we will see one or two more chapters of his days in Rohan before we move to Gondor.

Quite enjoyable- thank you for this.

Author Reply: Yes, nothing like working your way up from the bottom, and I'm sure Thengel will soon catch on that Aragorn has other, more useful skills to offer. I'm afraid that's it for Rohan though. Next up is Aragorn's arrival in Minas Tirith where there are will be several chapters.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I was a bit disappointed that this chapter was not about Aragorn visiting the Shire, but the exiting story made up for it!

Author Reply: Yes, sorry for that perhaps misleading end to the previous chapter. The basis for this story is that all the chapters have to relate to at least one quotable line from canon and so, as we don't know when Aragorn first met hobbits, I didn't attempt to write that story. I might start adding a note at the end of each chapter about where the story goes next to save disappointments in future. I'm glad you enjoyed the alternative though!

"Here, he was the man who cleaned out the swine and the kine" I love that line! As if he was not humble enough!

Author Reply: LOL! Yes, I really have made him work his way to the top, haven't I?

I've just read all seven chapters and all I can say is
Well Done! This is remarkably good writing. I cannot wait to read more. Your take on Aragorn is entirely plausible and a pleasure to read. Thank you.

Author Reply: Gosh, thank you so much; I'm thrilled you enjoyed it enough to keep going!
And there certainly is a lot more to come!

I think this is one of the more realistic treatments of the introduction of Aragorn to the Rohirrim I've yet read. Let him prove himself a bit at a time; and it does sound as if the stables would be a vast improvement on the cot where he'd been staying!

And as a born and trained healer, I'd think he'd be as good with common complaints of horses as of men, particularly coming from cultures in which a good horse and a good sword were two of life's necessities!

Very nice.

Author Reply: 'a good horse and a good sword were two of life's necessities!'

Absolutely! I'm so glad you found this realistic. It can't have been easy being stranded in such a different culture where you can't speak a word of the language and without the kudos of being either the Lord of Imladris's foster son or the Chieftain.

And as I mention below, we know from that piece in HoME that he was good at treating horses. Thank you so much for your review.

How very fitting that Aragorn should be able to use his skills with horses in Rohan. It is lovely to see our Ranger/Healer/King with a none human patient for once as treating animals takes an especial skill.

Author Reply: There is a lovely piece in HoME, it must be The War of the Ring, where Aragorn is tending an injured Snowmane during the battle at Helm's Deep which I so wish Toklien had retained in the final version as it does show that he was as good with animals as people. And yes, treating animals does take a special skill - don't I know it LOL!
Many thanks for your review.

As I told you a couple of times before, I really liked your take on Aragorn's first days in Rohan. It is good that in your story Aragorn starts to learn about the other cultures of Middle-earth not as a warrior but humbly, helping to tend the stock, and alone at that, with no knowledge of Rohirric. Being wise as he is, that must have thought him some humility. A quality most rulers need but lack, and which Aragorn thankfully does possess oodles of.

Author Reply: Ah yes, Aragorn's humility, definitely one of the reasons we love him so much and, while I'm sure it was an innate quality within him, I expect he also learnt it in his time as a 'nobody'.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
