Aspects of Aragorn  by Inzilbeth 8 Review(s)

I really wouldn't want to be the one standing between the nine Ringwraith and a hobbit carrying the One Ring. *shiver* That night really must have seemed endless to Aragorn! I loved the added scene where the Ring tried to lead him into temptation - Aragorn must have thought about taking the Ring at least once. Of course, the Ring stood no chance against that specific heir of Isildur. It must have been such a relief to finally hear the cock crow and know the night would soon be over. I loved your take on Aragorn's vigil. :)

Author Reply: I'm so pleased you liked this. The more I thought about it, the more I realised what a terrible night this must have been for Aragorn and if there ever was a moment when he was tempted, it could well have been here. Quite! How would have wanted to be in his shoes!

Thank you so much for your review.

The silent vigil in Prancing Pony is a perfect setting for such an inner fight. And it had to be fought, sooner or later. That quote from the Last Debate and the image of Aragorn if he would take the Ring is equally powerful as the image of Dark Galadriel.

Author Reply: I'm glad you agree. That night, while the hobbits slept and the Ringwraiths were closing in, I'm sure had to be the most likely time for Aragorn to be tempted by the Ring. Once he came to know Frodo, and his respect for him began to grow, I doubt he would have even considered taking it.

He knew he had just defeated the greatest enemy he would ever face in his entire life; himself.

So, now we're firmly entrenched in the "gapfiller" section of the story. Your temptation of Aragorn was highly realistic--I only hope he will continue to have the strength of mind to keep the Ring's voice shut out from him!

Looking forward to seeing where this is going next...

Author Reply: Yes, how much to include or not; that was a big question! I hope you enjoy how I've handled it! Now I think you've earned yourself a cup of coffee after that marathon read! Thank you so much for all your reviews.

I love the way you show Aragorn's thoughts as he sits by the fire.I do believe he would have thought those things and had a moment's temptation.

Author Reply: I'm so glad we see this the same way. He really was in a very perilous situation that night and I'm sure the apparently easy option must have hovered in his mind. Thank you for your review.

A subtle saboteur, the Ring. It knows Men and how easy it is to suborn them--or most Men, at least.

Excellent thoughts and considerations going through the head of Aragorn son of Arathorn that night.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Larner. I'm sure even Aragorn had to have his moment of weakness.

I think you did a great job with The Ring. You wrote a very fascinating piece, which even though it does not involve action at all is very, very absorbing. In fact, I always like these pieces which show a character's inner conflict much better than I do the purely action ones. And you always manage to give us a very truthful portrait of what's going on inside Aragorn's mind. As usual, you did it again here.

I liked the introductory, descriptive paragraphs because in them you managed to reproduce very faithfully the mood of the book , and to give us a wonderful glimpse at how anxious and fearful Aragorn must have felt keeping guard over the hobbits at the Prancing Pony.

As for the temptation itself, I think it's spot on. I'm sure that's just how Aragorn must have felt when tempted by The Ring. Well done.

Author Reply: I'm very relieved you find the level of temptation here about right. I felt Aragorn should be tempted at some stage in the Quest and this first night always seemed the most likely time to me when he was under enormous pressure and did not yet know his hobbit companions very well. I'm so glad you liked this and thank you very much for your review.

There are so many things to like about this chapter... the sense of dread hovering over everything, Aragorn's fear--enough to actually make him feel sick, and then the temptation from the Ring itself, if he didn't already have enough to battle.

Two things strike me most:

"A nauseating wave of fear swept over him and refused to subside. He wondered how could he possibly hope to keep the Ring from falling into their hands if they all attacked the inn together. The answer was terrifyingly simple. He could not."

That is such a chilling set of sentences... you have to wonder if it's not the effect of the Nazgul already hitting him as they draw near.

And then this, my favorite line in the entire chapter: "Isildur’s Bane would not claim Isildur’s Heir."

Aragorn's strength of character summed up in a single sentence. Wonderfully done.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Cairistiona for your review. It must have a very scary and lonely existance trapped as he was, guarding something so important as the Ring. I'm glad his strength of character came through as this was surely one of his toughest tests.

Chilling. Ohhh, what a long night, and what an inner battle.

Author Reply: Thank you, Shirebound, that night must have felt never ending to Aragorn, sitting awake in lonely vigil.
