*sniff* What a wonderful tribute to Halbarad! I guess no one could wish for a more noble, brave, and loyal friend, kinsman, and follower. I like the thought that he died saving Aragorn's life - it would surely have been the kind of death he would have wanted for himself. *sigh* Poor Halbarad! I'm going to miss him through the following chapters.

Author Reply: Thank you! I sooooooooo wish we had seen more of Halbarad and knew a little more of his life. I'm so glad you enjoyed this tribute to him.

I don’t know what to say… I’m moved to tears.

Author Reply: I'm glad!

A really lovely tribute to the soon-to-be-fallen Halbarad here; it's nice to have a short introspective piece after the long action-packed whammies. Since he was able to foresee it I like to think that Halbarad did eventually come to some acceptance of his fate and even saw it as an honor to die in the service of the King Returned and his friend.

Author Reply: I'm so glad you agree with me here, Celeritas. I can't imagine Halbard viewing his fate any other way.

Thank you so much for your review.

I love the way your portrat Halbarad here. His loyalty and courage is truly awe inspiring.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Linda. I feel we know Halbard well, even though we see him so briefly and his courage and loyalty are certainly what speak to me.

One of the Shirefolk here again (I like that term). I meant to review this the other day but had to dash off to work.

This made me cry (not a frequent thing). I have always felt for poor Halbarad, supporting Aragorn all that time and not living to see the final victory. His love for his Chieftain is so strong that he follows him knowing it will mean his doom. *sniffle* Wonderfully written, as usual.

The role of the standard-bearer has always been a risky one - King Charles I's standard-bearer was killed but would not let go of the King's standard even after death. When it was recaptured his hand was still holding it, although no longer attached to the rest of him!

Author Reply: Hi Baggins Babe, it's great to see you again. I might be a ranger writer but I have a big soft spot for the Shirefolk!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this. It is as if Halbarad willingly sacrificed his own life for Aragorn and I too find that very moving.

I didn't know that about Charles 1's standard bearer. That is so sad; thank you for including mention of it.

PS The next chapter contains hobbits!

The greatest of tributes from the brother of his heart, who has shared as much of his labors as possible in the past sixty years.

Wonderful and moving!

Author Reply: Thank you very much, Larner, I'm so glad you enjoyed this.

Arg! You made me cry, it's so sad that Halbarad has to die (sniff) he was such a true brother to Aragorn. Hugs The Imp

Author Reply: Well I'm sorry I made you cry, *hugs* back, but thank you very much for telling me!

It's funny how Tolkien told us so little about Halbarad, but we all assume (at least I did from the first time I read LOTR), that he and Aragorn were very close and loved each other very much. Maybe it is due to Aragorn's happiness when Halbarad arrives, and because it was he that Aragorn chose as companion during the palantír ordeal. It just goes to show how Tolkien can show you things through slight details like these.

Your chapter is a lovely and poignant tribute to Halbarad of The Dúnedain.

I loved the way you let us see through Halbarad's eye how much Aragorn grew and how much his people loved and cherished him.

Their friendship, love, loyalty and respect for each other shine here. Well done indeed.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Estelcontar, for your review and your very kind words. It is extraordinary how Halbarad has grown out of so few words in ROTK yet, as you say, the strength of his friendship with Aragorn is obvious, such is the genius of Tolkien!

This is a beautiful and inspirational tribute to Halbarad, and really brings everything back to the beginning. Well done.

And so at last you can throw away your disguise and as a king you will ride to the White City, though you have ever been a king to those of us who know and love you.

*sigh*

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Shirebound. This was the first chapter I wrote that had Halbarad in it and all the others sprang from it as his part in Aragorn's story demanded to be told!
