Moments of Grace  by Antane 4 Review(s)
Reviewed Chapter: 1 on 10/7/2008
I frankly find the premise more than a little off-putting. This particular chapter has nothing particularly egregious, but in general, attempts to impose one's own Christianity on Tolkien's work seem to me to go directly against authorial intent, and generally make it difficult for me to suspend disbelief and enjoy the story.

Author Reply: Sorry you did not enjoy, but I did not impose "my own" Christianity here, but don't take my word for it but the Professor's own who "imposed" his Christianity onto the tale. To think he did not is to misunderstand (and you aren't the only one) what he did in this "fundamentally religious and Catholic work" to use his own words - see: http://touchstonemag.com/archives/article.php?id=15-01-022-f
The web is full of essays and articles mentioning how deeply the Presence of God is throughout this tale, “that one ever-present Person who is never absent and never named" as one admirer said when the story was first published. (Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, p. 253). There is ample evidence throughout of that Presence of which I will not go into here or it will be longest reply of all time! If you are intrigued to learn more, I highly recommend The Battle for Middle-earth by Fleming Rutledge, The Gospel According to Tolkien by Ralph Wood, Following Gandalf by Matthew Dickerson, The Philosophy of Tolkien by Peter Kreeft and *ahem* my own paper on the topic that is here on SOA, The Fiat of Iluvatar's Children During the War of the Ring, that I wrote for the 2008 Tolkien Society Seminar. This is just a sampling of what is out there. You can find a little more at my blog - http://theroadthroughmiddle-earth.blogspot.com. I am writing a whole book on the spirituality contained in the Red Book and if you are so inclined to pray for it and for me, I'd be most appreciative - never hurts to ask!

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Very lovely as Elbereth is able to help him there! Wonderful. Yes, indeed a moment of grace.

Author Reply: Hantanyel! I'm glad you enjoyed since I wasn't sure how well I could pull it off, not knowing the Valar anywhere as I know hobbits! :) It's certainly a different way of looking at it and I'm glad it worked.

Wonderful Antane. Looking forward to many more of these.

Author Reply: Hantanyel, my dear! So good to hear from you! I would love to do the whole series this way, from Iluvatar's POV and Elbereth's when she's involved, we'll see! :)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
