Jumping To Conclusions  by Jay of Lasgalen 9 Review(s)

Cute little story. Poor Elrond, the things he has to deal with. It never ends, does it?

*lol* As much as I agree that the burning of the ships at Losgar and Amras’death is no story fit for elflings, I fear the twins will be after everyone to tell them just that after what Elrond said! And Elrond brought this upon himself this time. The story title was more than apt, considering how Elrond and Celebrían reacted. Though I have to admit I’d probably done the same – who would have connected burning ships to the Silmaril, after all?

Anyway, it was sweet that they wanted one of their little ships to be Vingilot. Somehow it is sad that all got damaged.
Maybe Elrond should build them a new Vingilot with a safe light on it as punishment for accusing Glorfindel ;-) For Elrohir was right, he should apologise to our dear balrog-slayer.

Author Reply: Elrond could probably have got away with an elfling's version of burning the ships - but then he had to go and mention Amras! He really should be used by now to the rather sideways thinking his sons use :)

I have always wondered where the burning death story comes from... the only I ever knew was the other one....

So - poor Glorfindel is blamed again. It probably has something to do with being around Feanor. Isn't everything Feanor's fault???

This was a delightful, though sad, moment. I can see Elrond's horror... but he should be more careful in the future.

Good thing the whole of Imladris didn't go up in smoke!

Author Reply: In The Silmarillion, Amrod and Amras both die at Sirion, but in HoME there is a mention that Amras was sleeping aboard one of the ships when Feanor set it alight - and so he died.

Poor Glorfindel - none of this was his fault. Elrond should stop and think!

Oh, Elrond, putting his foot in it! I did love the line about Celebrían:

His wife could be more terrifying than any Balrog when her ire was roused.

Author Reply: Elrond really needs to think before he speaks :) (especially when his sons are listening)

I see Celebrían as very protective of those she loves - so look out Glorfindel ...

I absolutely loved this, from fierce Celebrian to resigned Elrond, to the twins and the guard!

Favorite lines:
"I will make him wish he had never been reborn!"

and

“'I think you should say sorry to Glorfindel,' Elrohir said severely. 'It’s not fair to blame him for something he didn’t do!'”

Wonderful as always!

Author Reply: Thank you! Celebrian quite surprised me here - I really wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of her.

I think Glorfindel is going to enjoy getting his apology ...

*shiver* Yeah, that version of the Amras story gives me creeps, too, and I don't have a hunky Peredhel twin to hang on to when I need, um, emotional support..... *pouts*

This is really funny, Jay! I wanted to poke Elrond in the ribs... if they didn't understand the reference the first time you mentioned it, then don't mention it again! *snerk*

But, then, the twins are so intelligent (look at their parents, after all) that it was probably too late even after the first mention.

You know, the way you portray the young twins, they should have grown up to be scientists... you know, all that hands-on experimentation.... LOL!

I enjoyed reading this, Jay.... Well done!

- Barbara

Author Reply: The story of Amras would sound terrible to anyone - but I think it would seem even worse to other twins. *That* was the main reason Elrond and Celebrian were so horrified - but Elrond made things worse by his reaction. He made sure his sons would want to know the whole story! He really needs to stop and think ...

Now they've done it! Trying to emulate the glory of the Silmaril they instead emulate the one story it was felt they weren/t ready for--and next they'll be enacting that one! A, fatherhood! Heh!

Author Reply: Elrond should really watch what he says when the twins are around - they don't miss a thing!

This is completely adorable.

I will make him wish he had never been reborn!

What a terrific line.

Author Reply: Thanks - I couldn't resist that line!

I will make him wish he had never been reborn!

I laughed at this rewriting of the usual saying. It's just so ME. And you were also clever about the "hint of woodsmoke," which sounds so innocuous until you find out where it came from. Fun story, Jay.

Author Reply: It's fun to change our sayings to ones that the elves might use, and it was perfect for poor Glorfindel.

Ah, woodsmoke - such a typical smell on an autumn day, unless the twins are around :)

Thanks, Daw!
