His dear, beloved Hobbit Elf  by Kara's Aunty 7 Review(s)
AntaneReviewed Chapter: 1 on 11/7/2008
Lovely, my dear Aunty! Bravo and I hope to see more from you like this as you grow. Love it!

Namarie, God bless, Aunty Anne :)

Author Reply: Hello Aunty Anne,

You are too sweet for words! Thank you for your lovely comments, they thrilled me so much, I may put up another wee poem today, just for you (after my beadaches disappeard - I was up 'til 3am posting 'Much Ado...' the 'Concerning Sam not-so-oneshot).

All the best, always.

Ooh, a ballad! (ish)

Too often poetry these days, even in fandom, is sheer emoting, so it's nice to see something that fulfills its original purpose--storytelling!

I couldn't help but grin at the "hobbit elf" coinage that featured in the title and then at the end. Such a nice, succinct, hobbity way of putting one of the subtler concepts in the books.

Cheers!

Author Reply: Hello Celeritas,

Thanks very much for your lovely words!

I actually can't remember if I've seen the term 'Hobbit Elf' in another fanfic somewhere or not. The term came to mind instantly when I tried to imagine how Sam would percieve his Frodo and then I racked my brains to recall any fic I may have seen it in. If I did read it somewhere else, the story/author eludes me or I would have asked their permission first and credited them for it.

Maybe it is mine though, and I'm just so clever that I can fool even myself (chortles wildly).

Anyway, regardless of that particular term's origin, I'm glad you enjoyed the poem.

Thanks again!

I liked this poem.

Author Reply: Hello Linda,

Thanks very much for reading and dropping me a wee note to show your appreciation. It makes the effort of writing worthwhile-and it's always nice to here from you!

I was a bit nervous at posting this because a) I'm not a writer of poetry normally (you could probably tell as 'His dear, beloved...' was very basically structured) and b) wasn't sure anyone would read it, let alone review - but you and the other kind reviewers have put my mind at ease (phew!).

Thanks again!

Maureen :)

Ah, yes, nicely done. Seeming simple enough to be a children's song, yet telling of great deeds and terrible trials, along with fierce love and resolute loyalty.

Sam shines through, with all his inherent hobbit courage and goodly nature, and even a brief flash of wit (Or see to it he ate his fill/This incognito Underhill), reminding me a little of his Troll song.

Author Reply: Hello Lindelea,

Thank yoy VERY much for your kind review. I'm very flattered to get one from you - your works were highly spoken of by Larner when she reviewed another story of mine on ff.net, so I am humbled by your thoughtful words.

So pleased you liked this - I had to make this simple because the only kind of poetry I know is 'rhyming' and limericks (I'm really showing my 'sophistication' here!). I'm not gifted with poetic brilliance but somehow my muse doesn't care and keeps yelling at me to 'write the bloomin' things' down anyway. Still, it doesn't seem to have turned out too badly if highly recommended authors like yourself dropped me some kind words (smiles widely)!!

This ode was actually supposed to cover the events of Sam's journey from the Shire and back again - but I nearly ballked when the escapade to Rivendell alone took umpteen chapters, so I left it there and pretended it was deliberate. (seems to have worked - phew).

Glad you enjoyed it - and thanks again for dropping a note!

Perhaps not Robbie Burns, but excellent nonetheless. Poor Frodo, and poor Sam! No, Frodo's not the same as he was; but when they return neither is Sam. No longer simple, no longer merely faithful, but wise with the wisdom wrung from continually facing evil in spite of all.

My dear, delightful Larner
Has sent me another review
This honour than comes from you
Has made me a happy bunny
(This ode is not very funny)
So thank you and I raise my glass
To Larner, an author with class!

That this would be their journey’s end

No more adventures for his friend

He’d take him home to Hobbiton

Where Shire lives would carry on

I found that verse so poignant. It must have seemed to Sam that their task was done--I'm sure all of the hobbits just wanted to go home at that point.

That they went forward anyway is such a testament to their determination, love and devotion.

Author Reply: Hello Dreamflower,

I'm so sorry! I thought I'd replied to this but have just seen that I did not.
Let ma make amends by composing a small ditty for you:

Dreamflower is a lovely name
No one else I know bears quite the same
To every chapter she brings delight
With each review that she does write

She recced me at her LJ page
It meant more than my weekly wage
For one to take such joy in my
Wee tale could wet a teary eye

Thank you for all your lovely words
It's really more than I deserve
I hope this ditty makes up for my
Extremely tardy Review reply!

He’d leave the Shire to keep him safe
No harm would befall the slender waif
Whose spirit shone so bright and free
With Light that faithful Sam could see

A lovely poem!

Author Reply: Oh wow!

A review from Shirebound - I'm not worthy!

Thank you very much for your kind words, I am truly honoured.
