Hope's Endurance  by Kara's Aunty 23 Review(s)

Those poems are so adorable! I love the relationship between Frodo and Sam, and you really show both of their sweet personalities. The "Gray Havens" chapter always breaks my heart...but it's wonderful that they get together at last in Valinor. That's just like Tolkein, to make an ending both incredibly sad and beautifully happy at the same time! You did a good job showing both emotions and I liked the rhyming. I could imagine two people performing this piece, going back and forth.

Oh dear cousin mine
Who writes so well of hearts entwined,
I thank ye very much
For this latest in a bunch!
For such a beautiful love song
of Joy awaited so long
This is great
Well worth the terrible wait!
Now let me express
Namarie and God bless!

Author Reply: Hello dear Cousin,

What a treat to read your poetic review - I accept it with the honour it was given! And I'm humbled that you took the time to compose this little masterpiece of your own (and flattered beyond belief that you did).

I am delighted beyond measure that you approve, my little Imp!

Thanks for all the reviews - and all the inspiration :)

No one has a clue as to how Frodo and Sam found healing in the West, and that's the marvel of it! Fan fiction can be so much fun at times...

I do like to think of Sam's speech and vocabulary improving over the years--for one thing I think that thirteen children would have necessitated an increase of ones denoting frustration!

Ah. This is the last Eucatastrophe in a tale so fraught with sorrow.

Author Reply: Hello Celeritas,

Indeed: the last in a tale so fraught with sorrow, so you can imagine who jappy I am to be finished writing them (they were quite depressing at times).

But they're done and dusted now!

Sam would have been one of the most educated hobbits in the Shire by the time he left, indeed, but the word still felt a bit odd to use (for any hobbit actually - 'extract' doesn't strike me as very hobbit-ty).

Thanks for reading and reviewing throughout this tale!

Lovely, as always. Especially...

Whatever’s next your Sam’s prepared
As long as I can turn and see
Your glowing Light is next to me

If you're interested, I wrote a story exploring my own idea as to what form Frodo's healing took, which is at this archive: "The Path to Healing". Two others are "Sing Me Home" and the AU "Healed".

Author Reply: Hello Shirebound,

Thanks (as always) for reading and reviewing, I'm glad you enjoyed!

I'll need to give your healing fics a visit to see what you think happened to our trusty hobbits in Valinor!

Thank you for your support and all the best to you!

Sam is far more knowledgable than he appears, I think. He's had years to read and write and expand on his vocabulary, I think. After all, it's been forty years since he last saw his Mr. Frodo.

And the two of them must have been so happy to spend their final days there in that beautiful place, together.

Author Reply: Hi Larner,

yes, Sam is surely nobody's fool! Especially after his trials, not to mention the company he keeps and his own life experiences (and many they were).

I'm sure Sam & Frodo spent the rest of their days in a blissful haze on Tol Eressea. May we all be as lucky one day!

Hope you liked it! Thanks for reviewing.

Oh, I liked the last stanza! : )

And I also enjoyed how this was a not-quite conversation, since they don't know what the other is saying but their currents of thought run along the same lines. Frodo's greying hair also brought a smile to my eyes (I have shored up in my list of little moments in Eressea some point at which he sees himself in a mirror/convenient still pool of water and goes, "I'm grey?!?" not realizing how much time has gone by).

The stark reticence of the stanza about Bilbo's death, though, especially the last line, made it probably my favorite out of all the moments in your poetry so far. He still sounded quite shocked and numb!

Cheers!

Author Reply: Hello Celeritas,

Oh I AM glad you enjoyed the last stanza. I was feeling quite Tookish when I wrote it and thought it a good way to bring a little reality to the situation (after some of the earlier emotional stanzas). Although I was afraid it might ruin it for some readers. Sometimes though, you've just got to take chances.

It was a bit strange writing this, because I went from the wistful beginning, to moments of (I hope) humour, to sudden tragedy, then humour, etc, etc. But it all worked out in the end - and I'm glad the lonely pocket watche has company in your good wishes.

Thanks for the lovely review!

Oh, thank you, my dear cousin! So excited to hear another song from them through you! Love it and how they echo each other as it were. You are so kind to indulge me. *hugs* Can't wait for the next one! :) :)

Namarie, God bless, The cheeky imp :)

Author Reply: Hello Imp,

I'm delighted you approve! I deliberately wrote each verse that way, so it would seem as if they were having a conversation, even though it was, of course, impossible during their long separation.

The next one way be a few days away because I need to finish 'Much Ado...' which is currently swinging around my neck like an albatross (I also think the final poem will be the most difficult to write as my knowledge of Valinor is non-existent, so I'll have to research).

So you'll need to exercise your (non-existent) patience (cackles madly).

I know, I'm very naughty!

See you cuz,

Aunty Mo.

Yes, a long and happy life, and now reunion to come--for both of them that last blessing. How difficult it must have been when Bilbo left Frodo.

So very sweet a tale.

Author Reply: Hello Larner,

Poor Frodo indeed, without Bilbo. The comparison of his loss to Sam's growing brood was something I thought required attention.

Thanks for your welcome words!

Dear Sam your boat it sails to me!
I sense your journey over Sea

I hope that's exactly how it happened!

Author Reply: Hello Shirebound,

I hope that's how it happened too. I thought if Frodo sensed Rosie's death, he may have been aware of Sam's journey to Valinor. Perhaps he wasn't, but it's a nice thought.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Hi Maureen,

gerne darfst Du meinen Limerick benutzen! Aber gegenüber Deinen Gedichten war meins doch eher simpel.

In other words: Of course you can :)

Author Reply: Toll, toll, toll!
