Wherever the Prompt Might Lead  by Larner 14 Review(s)
Queen GaladrielReviewed Chapter: 10 on 12/17/2008
Wow, what powerful imagery. It's almost poetry.

He had worn the Ring as a pendant about his neck, a silver chain threaded through a hole of gold fit to swallow the world.  The Ring had been
prepared to drink his life and the Light of his Being as if from a bottle, breaking the lock that guarded his heart and emptying his soul.

Ever he had been played upon as if he were the string of a violin, the note trued by the vibration of a celestial fork.

Wow.

Author Reply: Thank you so. Sometimes the necessary spareness of fixed-length ficlets works to promote more intense imagery, and sometimes it's just not enough to allow for the story elements one wishes to convey. This time it works.

A wonderfully poetic use of the prompts.

Author Reply: Thank you so, Linda! I love to do my share of Grey Havens scenes, as you know!

Ingenious use of the prompts; and beautifully written too!

Author Reply: Thank you so, Raksha! I am honored! And you know my love of writing pathos.

Wow! That was beautifully done!

And that was still another meaning of the word "fork" which I hadn't known so far. In German you need a prefix to do so. While "Gabel" is the fork you eat with, "Stimmgabel" is the fork to tune a string with.

Word count: 150! I'm really impressed!

Author Reply: So far the word count on each one has been 150, so we will see how long I can keep it at that limit.

The proper name is "tuning fork," so you can see I did some shortening of it in order to make it fit in.

And thank you for the response.

Yes, definitely the best one so far, very sad, consumed by both Light and Dark. Love the ending. *bows to Frodo myself*

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Thank you so, Antane. And I bet quite a few folks bowed to Frodo, and that he found it embarrassing at first but finally learned to live with it. But now is but the beginning of his healing.

Wow! Just wow!

Author Reply: Oh, thank you so, Dreamflower. It was rather difficult getting all the words worked into it, but was worth it in the end.

The second paragraph was very poetic. Though all in all, it is sad to know how much the Ring influenced Frodo's life, and not in a good way.

Author Reply: Thank you so, Kitty. It's getting harder to work all the words in, so to find this one has yet managed to move so many is heartening. Yes, the Ring robbed Frodo of much; yet in the end he found a proper compensation for what he sacrificed.

I've been enjoying all these ficlets (they make for a wonderful advent calendar indeed), but this is my favourite so far!

Author Reply: Thank you so! I don't like the inclusion of "monkey" in this one, but could think of no other way to work it into this one. And I'm glad this is your favorite so far. I'm honored. Now--if I can keep it up!

Alone with his soul and its memories, one unto himself.
Lynda

Author Reply: Unfortunately, Lynda. Thanks so!

Real neat, Larner. I loved the imagery and the last line was the clincher. BTW 'trued'... did you mean 'tuned'? Just wondering.

Author Reply: I am glad you think so.

As for "trued" or "tuned"--I think it comes to the same thing either way, don't you? But I shall consider....

Thanks, Fiondil.
