A Bit of a Song  by Primsong 5 Review(s)

Since we are in the midst of a nasty, cold, snowy winter where I live... the first paragraph made me pine for those days when one can still venture out and not freeze off one's nose!

I loved the way Boromir paused - perusing the area - markings of a true soldier - never one to rush in (not like poor Eomund) without checking out the lay of the land first. He must have been so bored and frustrated and yes, lonely... I have always hoped that the two men became friends during their travels... Aragorn's tears and the lament by the three at his passing, seem to hint that, indeed, the man had come to be loved and valued. And that doesn't usually happen one-way!

'that perfect golden circle' - I found this phrase chilling - not often would one expect a warrior to think of a ring in such terms - *shivers* Therefore, one must definitely conclude that the Ring was calling to him, almost immediately. *shivers again*

The fact that Boromir is not finding answers to his questions must truly be frustrating... I'm sure Denethor took him totally into his confidence in all matters... Must have been extremely difficult, even knowing he was NOT in charge here, to accept.

One thing I found quite interesting - I suddenly shivered as I realized, probably not your intent, that Bilbo has a strange affinity to Denethor. I think one of the Denethor's greatest 'gifts' was in being able to question people, discern their thoughts, and then sift the information he needed. Much like our Bilbo was doing now. *shivers a third time*

Great tale - thanks for sharing it.

Author Reply: I think it would be entirely possible that Bilbo knew more about Gondor's founding histories than Boromir did, he was simply stringing him along to see what manner of man he was. And no, I never would have thought that he would share any aspects whatsoever with Denethor, but the insight into others could certainly be seen as such. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, (((Agape))).

Ack! I wrote you a nice long review, and for some reason it got eaten when I tried to post it! I'll try to remember what I said. *sigh*

You pictured Boromir's homesickness and his ambivalance about his mission very well--I love the part about Mithrandir, and about Aragorn--yes, he'd try to stay close to what was familiar in this strange land. And of course, he's already showing an unhealthy interest in the Ring.

And your Bilbo, as usual, is perfectly Bilbo-ish! Yes, he's chattering a bit, but he's also sizing up this big Man who is going to be accompanying his Frodo into the Wild. And I also love his curiosity about Minas Tirith and Gondor. He's too old to go adventuring again--but his Tookish spirit is quite hale and hearty.

Lovely conversation!

(feel free to delete the blank review. sorry about that.)

Author Reply: Aw, well thank you so much for valiantly giving it a second try. I always appreciate hearing what your thoughts are, Dreamflower. What an interesting tale it might have been if the dear old hobbit had still been young, eh?

Poor Boromir! To him, Gondor is the center of the world, but to others, there may be other wonders and interests around which they center their lives. A fascinating look at the differences between Bilbo and Boromir, to be sure.

Author Reply: They are not often mixed, though both could hold their own in their native element. Nice to see you here, thank you for reading!

So wonderful to hear from you again!

Poor Boromir--totally put at a loss by a Hobbit. He must have wondered whether Bilbo was confused or teasing or what? I suspect Bilbo was delighted to bebother the Man! He was obviously having great fun with the whole affair!

Delightful.

One correction--Dúnedain is the plural; Dúnadan the singular. (It's one mistake I had rather hammered into my head by those who are more expert in Sindarin and Quenya than I! Heh!)

Author Reply: Thank you so much - correction made! I thought it looked odd somehow but wasn't sure why. And yes, Bilbo was always delighted to bebother anyone he found a bit too full of themselves. ;-)

“watery sunlight” was a beautiful but simple description. I’d never thought to put the two together!
Wonderful delvings into Boromir’s heart: his restlessness, his homesickness, longing for a familiar face, and of course, his calculating mind and pride. It had crossed my mind when reading FotR how lonely it must have been for him in Imladris. Boromir and Bilbo is not one of those often done mixes, that’s certain. (“He was not used to being put off.” – Oh, that’s so funny! :D)
Bilbo’s so Bilbo! Yes, he’d keep Boromir of Gondor waiting to finish up his writing!
But this undercurrent of Boromir’s to find out more of the Ring adds an almost – just almost – sinister tone. Yet I really like the rich variety that came of it, of hard determination, to lightness, to thoughtfulness…
*laughing* Poor guy! Bilbo couldn’t recall that Gondor was anything BUT a village. Ooh, that was not a good move on Boromir’s part: he shouldn’t have gotten Bilbo started on talking about his travels…
“The dwarves I mean, not Frodo of course.” *sputtering and laughing again*
Well, Borramur got more than he bargained for and still nothing that he expected to get!
Now I’m wondering too how much Bilbo was saying in jest… How much does he information does he really need from the Dunedain? :)
I really, really enjoyed this, Primsong!

Author Reply: Woe to any who thought Bilbo Baggins to not be one of the sharper tools in the tool-shed. I expect he had a good chuckle about it with Aragorn later on, he's a bit of a rascal sometimes. Very pleased that you enjoyed this little piece, thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review.
