Ancestress  by Dreamflower 12 Review(s)

Run a hobbit dry on genealogy? She must be something indeed!

Author Reply: She's quite thirsty for any news she can get of her family. She is taking shameless advantage of her new "grandchildren" to get it.

Brother rightly plecas some things in perspective and says some important words, but the most important one is missing: SORRY. Even though it is true that things must be placed in context, and the evils of the Inquisition are often completely overblown, there is simply no doubt that the Inquisition WAS responsible for countless atrocities not only against invading Muslims but also for Marranos Jews, often converted to Catholicism by force, whose only crime was to try to retain some of their ancient Jewish customs that had been, after all, instituted by God Himself. Can the cruel expulsion of ALL Jews from Spain in 1492 be justified under any circumstance? It seems to me that in this case no apologies makes for a very bad policy and very un-catholic attitude. Did the Lord not teach that humility (and not triumphalism) is a virtue? Instead of denying or sweeping away the sins of our forefathers, might it not be more Christ-like to just say sorry'?Pope John-Paul II began this process of humble repentance, but it sure still has a long way to go ArielCatholics for Israel (www.catholicsforisrael.com)[]

"The Tookish Inquisition" indeed, Dreamflower! Nobody expects the...well, you know! Heh! Poor Bilbo and Frodo didn't get to ask their questions...yet!

I love this story so very much =)

Author Reply: Nope, they didn't! How frustrating for them, LOL! But she'll begin answering them one by one...

I'm so glad you've been enjoying it!

*grin* The chapter title seems quite apt, you know ;)

Um ... has Mirimë taken up this interest in genealogy from her husband or vice versa? To want to know the family trees all the way through seems a very hobbity trait.

Though it was not nice of her to simply leave after that, instead of answering questions herself now. I am sure next time she will not get off that easily.

Author Reply: Well, actually, I think it is simply the curiosity of a "grandmother" about her "grandchildren", LOL! But I think as well, her taking on of a hobbity appearance extended as well to her nature-- by taking on a hobbit form, she also took on the hobbit interest in knowing all about family!

No, she has quite a tale to tell to her "grandsons"!

Frodo soon found his own well of genealogical knowledge running dry when he had scarcely gone back to Isumbras IV. Bilbo however was made of sterner stuff, and was able to go all the way back to Marcho and Blanco and the beginning of the Shire.

*rolls on the floor, laughing* Oh, Bilbo, my Bilbo! Not only has he faced Dwarves and Dragons and whatnot, he even managed to deal with Grandma dearest. Now, that's a hobbit of my own liking.

Author Reply: Bilbo's been around a long, long, long time. I don't think there is much left in the world to fash him anymore!

Tea didn't exactly go as they hoped, but there will be time enough for them to ask their own questions. Gandalf held back a lot of secrets, it seems.

Author Reply: There will be another visit, yes. And you will notice, she left Gandalf in Bilbo's and Frodo's clutches. Do you think *he* will get away as easily as she did? LOL!

I'm stunned and dismayed too! She needs to come back and let them have a turn at the questions. We know the Took family tree, it is she who is the mystery. Great way to stretch out the suspense. This is such a wonderful story. Can't wait for more.

Author Reply: It is a way to stretch things out. But really, I just thought "ladies first". She was their g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-great-grandmother after all, I'm sure she wanted to know how the kids turned out!

And she'll be back, I assure you!

Nobody expects--

Please don't tell me that the Tooks' curiosity came from her as well! (Well, maybe she only enhanced it...)

This was delightful, and the bit at the end where she left most discourteously (I'm imagining some sort of a camera freeze on Frodo and Bilbo's faces at the end kind of like in a cheesy sitcom) made me smile. I'm only less perturbed than they are because I know that I'll find out eventually!

Author Reply: No. Well, no more from her than from her husband, anyway. Perhaps both of them were somewhat curious and so their descendants got a double dose, LOL! No, in this particular case, this was no more than the normal curiosity of a "grandmother" who wanted to know how all her grandchildren were getting on, LOL! I'm sure that if photography had been invented back then, she would have wanted pictures of them all!

Yep, that's just the sort of thing I imagined as well.

Well, it looks like Bilbo and Frodo were beaten at their own game ;-)

On the other hand, it sounds logical that an ancestress is interested in family trees!

However, I wish for the hobbits to get answers to their own questions as soon as possible.

Sometimes she would turn her gaze upon Gandalf, and ask "Why did you not tell me of that?"

LOL!!! Maybe, old Gandalf could not remember all the details?

Author Reply: Well, of course she wants to know how all her "grandchildren" turned out!

She will have to give some answers! But not yet!

Maybe. I'm sure he tried his best.

Bilbo however was made of sterner stuff

LOL! This is delightful.

Author Reply: *grin* Thanks! I figured Bilbo would be very well versed in the Family Trees! And he'd had many more years in the Shire to perfect his knowledge.
