Only a Second or Two  by Larner 13 Review(s)

Hello Larner,

My goodness! A young Bilbo moment - I've never came across one of these. And so beautifully charming.

Very well done!

M ;)

Author Reply: Hi, Maureen. I've done a few moments, but moments only. Lindelea in her story about the Fell Winter has rather more of Bilbo as a child. It's fun to imagine what he might have been like as a child.

LOL! I love it! And as we know, Bilbo didn't end up being like anyone the Shire had ever seen, bless him!

Author Reply: Oh, indeed so! Bilbo proved to have the Took adventurous spirit and ability to think on his feet as well as the Baggins integrity. A most special one, our Bilbo.

Glad it invoked a laugh.

Oh, dear, that Took is starting to peek out in him already! I'm assuming that that end quotation is from poor Bungo, isn't it? Fellow must have been at his wits' end when his son started taking after Mother...

Author Reply: Ah, yes, Bungo is speaking out there. And I love to think that at times as a child Bilbo did take after the Took side! Heh!

Thanks for the feedback!

Worth major brownie points for the last line alone; but I loved the rest of the drabble for the glimpses of Belladona's character and little Bilbo's.

Now you've got me wondering why as lively a person as Belladonna would marry so staid a soul as Bungo? Was he really that stodgy?

Anyway, great drabble!

I'm glad Bilbo had a little of them all in him!Delightful.

Author Reply: Yes, if Frodo was the product of a complicated Hobbit pedigree, the same is true of his nominal uncle. Glad you enjoyed it, Linda.

Except for her lamentable habit of singing comic songs in public

LOL!!! I like Belladonna very much! Not only her son, but also her - well, I'm not as good as hobbits when it comes to describing relation grades, but I mean Frodo - tried this out, but only once, I believe ;-)

And of course, spending time with Gerontius must have roused young Bilbo's Took side even more!

Dragons and treasure, indeed :)

Author Reply: I, too, am finding I like the hints I get as to Belladonna's character. Yes, her great nephew did follow in her footsteps at least once that we know of, so we know he, too, had his Took side! And undoubtedly Gerontius did rouse the Took in young Bilbo, at least some.

At least as a child Bilbo was preparing for his destiny. Heh!

Ah, it's all the fault of that Tookish blood, that's for sure! Very well done.

Author Reply: Indeed yes. Thanks so, Inzilbeth!

Cute! I think of the Hobbit where Gandalf is expecting a hobbit seeking adventure in Bilbo and finds that is not the case! But he has his adventure anyways and the rest is history... :)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Ah - good old Belladonna - and her da.... Delightful tale!

Author Reply: Yes, in the end more responsible for Bilbo's character than any might have dreamed--other than a horrified Bungo, of course! Heh!

LindeleaReviewed Chapter: 4 on 3/4/2009
Awww. I love the descriptions. Belladonna sounds fun!

Hmm. It seems as if Bilbo had buried that adventurous spark pretty deep by the time Gandalf came a-knocking, 30 or 40 years later... but it's nice to see the seeds of it growing in the early days.

Thanks!

Author Reply: Oh, I so agree that Belladonna does sound fun. We know that Bilbo had limited himself to vicarious adventures through reading as of the arrival of Gandalf on his doorstep to be greeted with several different meanings of "Good morning!" But indeed the seeds were still vital!

And thank YOU!
