Only a Second or Two  by Larner 9 Review(s)

Hooray! For Merry and Frodo! The folk of the Shire just did not comprehend the sacrifice.....

Author Reply: No, most of them never did appreciate what was done "out there" and what that meant for the Shire.

Bravo, Merry!

Merry's response shows that Fred and the four travellers think in completely different dimensions! Fred is only concerned with himself, his shop and maybe the Shire.

But Frodo saved the world!!!

I don't think it likely though, that Fred understands the full meaning of Merry's words! It's like "casting pearls before swine". But it had to be said :)

Author Reply: Merry's eyes have been opened to much more than the Shire, while Fred's not had that opportunity. I suppose we can't judge him too harshly. But at least one common Hobbit from the Bucklands should know Frodo did something extraordinary out there!

Thanks so, Andrea. I love Merry here, and he's the one who I'm certain would say such a thing to someone like Fred Oldbuck.

Such an idiot ... *grumble* Without leaving the Shire and learning a thing or two about courage, about fighting and strategy these four would have been only four more intimidated Hobbits - and I don't want to think about what would have happened to Frodo if he had been there with the Ring. But of course, one can't expect Fred to understand so much logic :/

Author Reply: Well, he's not had the chance to grow they have known, both literally without and within. You're right that it's likely these would have been little enough without the stretching the quest gave them, probably indeed a few more frightened, intimidated Hobbits before Lotho and Saruman's Big Men. But Fred's not to understand that as yet, I fear.

Thank you so!

Good for Merry! I'd buy him a drink for that, but I don't think I'm old enough by Shire reckoning of ages.

Author Reply: Well, Pippin was drinking in the inns at twenty-eight, and appeared to be well aware of the quality of beer at the Golden Perch in Stock. I doubt it would have been too much of a problem! Heh!

As for me--don't know if the card folks in the Shire, but I doubt they'd do so with me--am definitely looking my age!

Merry's comeback has to be one of the best I've heard in a long time!

(Leave it to that hobbit to find the right word at the right time... LOL!)

(Though on second thought perhaps that hasty, almost thoughtless response left Frodo wincing. Poor Merry.)

Author Reply: Merry had the right word, although Fred is unlikely to understand, and as you noted Frodo is wincing terribly! Ah, but such is life!

Well, the last drabble for this month is finished, written, and posted. I hope all enjoy it, as it's quite angsty.

Oh--rehearsal for concert? Ooh!

I'll try to see about lunch....

Got Tales from the Perilous Realm today and The Maps of Middle Earth--now have full representation from both Alan Lee and John Howe. The former is actually just a compilation of Tree and Leaf, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Roverandom, and Smith of Wooten Major, so it's not like I don't have the works separately, of course. What makes it worthwhile is that Lee illustrated it. The maps were done by Howe, and has commentary by Brian Sibley.

Life continues on in fits and starts, of course....

Thanks so, Lindelea.

Author Reply: One more in this series, and as Dawn Fegalund had the prompt posted early, I have it already written and posted! This series is now officially closed!

“He was saving the world.”

Perfect answer!

Author Reply: I would indeed think it was indeed the perfect answer, Cairistiona. Thanks!
