Yew  by Pearl Took 4 Review(s)
LarnerReviewed Chapter: 10 on 3/5/2010
Now, this is darling! I love the way they got inside, and the Gaffer doing his best to keep everyone out in spite of the inducement of tarts! And the interaction of Yew with these new folk--perfect!

Author Reply: Thank you, Larner! I'm so glad you liked this chapter and felt it rang true. The Gaffer is a stalwart hobbit - like son like father. ;-)

Bilbo huffed. "It looks like a miniature Smaug."

Yew's eyes flashed. He raised his front end up, reared back and blew a sizeable blast of flame at the old Hobbit

LOL! I can imagine that!

What I liked best was Yew riding on Gandalf's shoulder! Normally it's the other way around, isn't it?
But as Bilbo rightly pointed out: Yew is VERY small :-)

Author Reply: Oh my! Sorry I'm long in replying, Andrea.

I had such a vivid "vision" of that scene :-)I'm glad it came through well to you.

Yew would have found it undignified to have to waddle hurriedly after the long-legged wizard and he can't fly yet, so much better to ride upon a shoulder.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! :-)

Oh, what a joy to see a new chapter of this. I can't help myself, I like Yew, even if he is a dragon. I am looking forward to seeing where Gandalf decides to settle him and how everything works out.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Garnet. :-) I like Yew as well. There are some interesting turns coming up, but I think he will end up a happy dragon.

Thanks so much for following this story and for commenting! :-)

Yew really does have lovely manners, and I really like Bilbo giving him respect as 'a guest in his home'. After all the fire-breathing, of course. :)

handing the gardener a tart as she walked by him. It kept him from noticing that her rather large purse was occasionally wiggling.

That's adorable.

Author Reply: I remember that much was made to Bilbo in "The Hobbit" about having to treat Smaug with courtesy - that he had to play to the dragon's ego - and that Smaug was courteous as well . . . if only in his manner of speaking. ;-)

I thought, the Gaffer being a Hobbit, what better way to distract him!

So glad you are enjoying this story, shirebound, and thank you so much for you kind comments. :-)
