Veterans and comrades in battle enjoined by the pleasure of smoking their pipes together. I love Pippin's POV, he has made it to the other side of seeing many horrible things and still can eat a substantial breakfast (the smell of burning flesh would definitely end my appetite) and fuss over Merry. It's now the little things and smells that draws Pippin back toward the more normal life. And it is good that he now associates the smell of metal polish with a reunion of a friend instead of battle. It is those little things that you show that will help heal all of these soldiers in the future. Great story!

How wonderful that Pippin has new scents to help distract from others he's known in the past day or two! Excellently done! Author Reply: Yes, indeed! And since scent holds memory with such a grip, I hoped that pipe smoke at least will bring him happy memories the rest of his life. Thank you for reading and for commenting!

I have heard that smell is almost the strongest component of memories. People can smell chalk dust and remember their first grade class, or fresh bread and remember their Grandmother's kitchen. I like the flow of Merry and Pippin's conversation here. They really do seem like two real friends who have come through a hard time together. And your description of the Houses and the Garden are very clear, very real. I remember, from the book scene with Aragorn calling Merry, Eowyn and Faramir back, the Athelas seemed to take on a different fragrance for each one. It drew on their memories of comfort and home. Now, Pippin will have new memories of the unique scents of his friends to draw on during the rest of the hard times yet to come, and afterwards to fight bad memories. Author Reply: Yes, smell is *such* a strong component for memories, hence why I chose so many and so carefully for this vignette. Thank you so very much for your kind words and for feeling that this fits into the canon well and is believable. It's what I strive for!!

The scent of reunion! What a lovely phrase. It's wonderful to experience this scene through Pippin's point of view. Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I've been thinking a lot about how changed Pippin is by this point in his journey, and I'm pleased that my delvings into his being resonated with you.
