This was such a lovely birthday fic... one I'll read and re-read. You've captured both men beautifully here. It had to have been so wrenching for both to step off that ship, knowing what lay ahead, but you've shown them handling it with the dignity one would expect from each of these. Absolutely lovely.

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I'm delighted you enjoyed this birthday story. It is strange but stories I write in a hurry often turn out the best!I'm pleased you felt I captured the characters.

Linda that was amazing. So deep and touching and totally masculine too. What makes it "worse" for me is that I am currently re-reading "Don't Panic!" by Boz4PM, and this fits in so perfectly with that story and the way Boz wrote those two characters... oh you made me cry! :( That was wonderful and I really loved it. It was beautiful.

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I'm delighted you enjoyed this story and found it touching and in keeping for the characters. I'm touched that I made you cry.

An excellent look at possibly the last conversation between Aragorn and his brave kinsman. You bring out their long relationship in a realistically understated way. And the ending is quietly heartbreaking. Well done!

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I'm delighted you enjoyed this story and found the conversation realistic.

Linda, I loved this moving vignette when I first read it, and loved again now that I've reread it. It has lost nothing of it's poignancy.

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review.I'm honoured you chose to reread this, which as usual I've tried to polish!

This is breathtaking. You've perched these two men on such a precarious balance. There's a philosophy that states hope and fear can't exist in the same sphere as knowledge because both are based on uncertainties. You capture that idea so well in this story! Aragorn and Halbarad have a sense what is about to happen, but there's enough doubt Aragorn can't resign himself to it. Not completely. He's still looking for a way to change the outcome and thinks it might be possible for Halbarad to avoid the warnings of foresight. He has to throw the option out, even when he knows it won't be accepted, but he respects Halbarad too much to insist on it. It truly is a fantastic balancing act between knowledge and fear, and it's also superb characterization work for two men caught in an impossible situation. This story has really made me think.

"I would have liked to see you wearing the Silver Crown," ..... "And be present at your wedding to the Evenstar.... watch you reign justly and wisely for a hundred or so glorious years surrounded by your children." HOW I WISH HALBARAD WAS ABLE TO WITNESS THIS ALSO.

"..but remember the good times we shared.." This is so sad!

The last line got me. I'm a mess! You got me crying again!

I agree with you 1005. Halbarad should have seen Aragorn's triumphand glorious reign. I'm touched that this moved you to tears.
