| AFAIK, you are the first (!) fanfic writer to address the issue of that necklace -- obviously valuable, likely an heirloom ... neglected by Tolkien! Tolkien mentioned the Lórien belt (necessary to the plot), but not the necklace. I believe he doesn't mention what became of Boromir's pack; I'd assume that if Boromir wasn't wearing the necklace, it would have been either in a pocket or in the pack. [Someone long ago -- Dreamflower, I think -- invented a keepsake of Boromir's which ends up with Pippin, and I have the vague feeling I read something similar from the early days, but can't remember who or what -- and those are the only plots along that line I've ever seen: other than the movie-verse vambraces, o.c.] One niggle: "the distant home of human souls." I believe JRRT never used the term "human" in his fiction (it may appear somewhere in other writings, but I don't know of any). To me, "human" in LoTR fanfic is jarring. Tolkien did use the adjective "Mannish" in the Appendices, though I don't know if it appears anywhere in the fiction; I guess some will avoid that as sexist. Another alternative is "mortal" -- though technically that would refer to the dwarves as well, and they were believed to have a different fate.... Author Reply: I am not sure if the necklace is heirloom or not - I don't remember if it is ever mentioned again in the book, but it seemed appropriate to describe it that way. Why did I mention it at all? Because, when I decided to write this story, the vambraces were the thing for the theme (find-keep), but I also wanted to check in the book if there was something else worth mentioning. So, I went to the scene of Boromir's appearance, and I read about the necklace. And of course, it was easy to fit it into the plot. :) Human/mannish/mortal... I guess I will simple leave it the way it is, especially because there is no perfect solution, as you also say. | |
