Of what worth are fine garb and jewels if the one wearing them proves a small man? In this case, it is the Man who proves himself in spite of his clothing and physical appearance.

Excellent contrast between appearances and reality, glitter and gold; continuing Tolkien's own theme of Aragorn's worth beneath mud-caked boots and travel-worn cloak...
