A chance at least, in return for the caring shown her.

Author Reply: Kindness can't go unrepaid in Tolkien's universe, can it? =)

Ooh, so they come to an understanding and Kadar accepts Thorongil's word--I always have considered that Aragorn's "keen gaze" not only was commanding but compelled those who fell under it to accept his word as truth, and this is a nice illustration of that. And good of Kadar to extend him the mercy to wait until morning before presumably renewing the hunt. I have a feeling Thorongil's troubles aren't over yet (and not just because there's still nearly half a month to go)!

Author Reply: I don't want to depreciate Aragorn's keen gaze, but here it was the duel that played a major part in Kadar's acceptance, I guess. It was a sort of "God's judgement", and that Thorongil managed to stay alive was also a weighty proof to him - the "keen gaze" did the rest =) And yes, we are only in half. We still don't know who is this "master" who wants Thorongil's death, for example, and why does he want it...
