| I just love this story! I could feel joyful excitement rising up in me as I read about the discovery and the process of refining it to use more easily. And my heart leapt along with Helyanwë's when she turned it up to the stars and saw what had been invisible before. An amazing, wonderful thing, those two small pieces of glass! :-) Well done! | And I imagine that is just about how Galileo came up with the idea of the telescope *grin*. I suspect most discoveries are made through seredipity and happenstance, much the way it's described here. An interesting piece, Ellynn. Thanks for sharing. Author Reply: Actually, it was a Dutch lensmaker Hans Lippershey who invented the telescope, a year before Galileo (1608). One version says he did it, another says his apprentice helped him, and another says that his children played with lenses and noticed that distant objects became bigger if the lenses were held properly. Who knows? :) Anyway, Galileo soon heard about it and made the telescope of his own. Lippershey didn't observe celestial objects; it was Galileo the one had been the first man to point it towards the sky. :) Thanks for your comment, I am glad you like this. :) | |

| What a thrilling discovery! She's the first Elf (but not the last) to admire the stars in such a wonderful way. How fitting that it should be a descendant of Fëanor, and unlike his inventions, this doubtless something that will be shared, not hoarded.
